Adlai E. Stevenson High School is the one and only school in the state of New York to offer its students the option of being involved with a hands on Marine Science Program.  Here at Stevenson, a student is given the opportunity to study about the oceans of our planet through participation and  experience.  Students read and discuss  problems that threaten our oceans.
In the pool, the students practice the work from the classroom.  Once in  the ocean, our students experience the world they command.

Stevenson is the only high school in the state to offer a true SCUBA program as sanctioned by the National Association of Underwater Instructors.  This multi-year interdisciplinary program leads to full certification as a Scuba Diver.

We live on land, but almost 68% of the earth's surface is covered by water.  How deep is the deepest part of the ocean?  What lives in these depths?  Why is  ocean water salty?  Are all oceans the same? Here on land, most creatures depend on sunlight, but how to the creatures of the deep sea exist?  We farm on land to provide food for the people of this planet, but where do we go when we run out of land and still need more food?  Most people do not know that the coral in the ocean is not a rock, but a living apartment house of animals?  Did you know that coral grows at a rate of only one inch per year?  Did you know that when you step on a coral growth, it might take 100 years for it to regrow to the same size?

The Stevenson Marine Science Program guides the students in the study of these and other questions.  We will explore the oceans and look at technology used to investigate ship wrecks of the past.  Students learn to work with scientific measurements and view the ocean as a living force.

Marine Scientists study the ocean so that we can make better use of its resources.  Today medical science is creating new drugs to save lives.  Many chemicals used to make these wonder medicines are being farmed in our oceans.  We don't know how or why, but we do know that no shark has ever been found with a cancer growth.  Might sharks hold the secret of a cure for cancer and aids?  Maybe one day a Stevenson High School Graduate will receive a Nobel Prize for solving this and other diseases.

The Marine Science Program at Stevenson High School is only for the very best students.  If you are lazy, if you like to cut class, if a grade of 65% is all you ever want in life  . . .  then we DO NOT WANT YOU!  Stevenson's Marine Science Program is for the elite.  We want students who plan to go to college.  We want our students to be the best they can be!
