Asp: A general all-purpose labor droid, the asp is found all over the galaxy. Industrial Automation makes several different basic asp models. The wide-ranging line can do everything from performing light household task to serving as lightsaber training units - a use which Darth Vader put them.
Assassin Droid: The ultimate symbol of society and technology run amuck, these droids are largely unstoppable killing michines, programmed to hunt down specific targets and destroy them. Originally designed in the days of the Old Republic to eliminate dangerous criminals or escaped prisoners, assassin droids performed their task so well that they were put into service by warlords, dictators, and criminal kingpins. The droids are intelligent and unswerving in their task; they have a kill rate better than 90 percent, even if it takes years to track down their target. Estimates are that up to a few million remain in the galaxy even though Emperor Palpatine outlawed them at the begining of his reign because they were being used successfully against Imperial officials. (Lord Torbin, the Grand Inquisitor, was killed when a shuttle crashed into his palace; an assassin droid is suspected of hiving killed the shuttle crew at a timely moment.)
Rogue assassin droids have been a major problem. Having completed their initial mission, they should have shut down, but many have come up with new missions on their own. These droids have no built-in ethical chip. The now-infamous Caprioril massacre occurred when one droid, programmed to kill Govenor Amel Bakli, decided that the most efficient way to accomplish this task was to murder all 20,000 spectators at a swoop arena while the govenor of the peaceful planet was in attendance. Another, ans Eliminator model 434, tried to kill Princess Leia Organa on Coruscant, but it was destroyed by Prince Isolder's bodyguard, Captain Astarta.
Astromech Droid: Robots such as Luke Skywalker's R2-D2 are all-round utility droids that carry out sophisticated computer repairs and undertake information retrieval. Astromechs are shotr and squat, usually cylindrical, and travel on a pair of treaded rollers. They often have a retractable third leg to help navigate difficult terrain. The droids specialize in starship maintenance and repair, even in hostile environments such as the vacuum of deep space. They often are loaded into special sockets behind the pilot's cockpit in small starfighters where they plug into all the ship's systems and scan real-time data, capably performing more than 10,000 operations a second to forecast potential problems. In effect, they act as copilot and, in emergencies, can even take over limited piloting chores. Many models can perform multiple tasks, from holographic projection to welding. Some have even been known to do a bit of bartending on the side.
