A very wise and powerful Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jinn was a member of the Jedi Order during the beginning stages of the unraveling of the Republic. Although Qui-Gon was considered worthy enough to be a member of the Jedi Council, his maverick style and his beliefs in the "Living Force" served the Jedi Order in contrast to the ways of the traditional Council member who believed in the "Unifying Force". Never the less, Qui-Gon faithfully served the Jedi Order his entire life. His most notable mission, and unfortunately his last, had started out as a simple one that involved settling a dispute between the Trade Federation and the planet of Naboo. A mission that soon changed into much more than Qui-Gon and his young apprentice could have ever imagined.
After being ambushed on the Trade Federation Starship, Qui-Gon and his Padawan Learner, Obi-Wan Kenobi, headed to the bridge to deal with those responsible but were forced to retreat when attack droids appeared to stop them. Once the two Jedi saw what was taking place, which was a massive number of battle droids being prepared for deployment, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan snuck on to one of the transport ships for a ride down to Naboo. Once they arrived, they immediately made their way to the Theed Royal palace and the Queen of Naboo. Along the way, as they try to avoid detection from the Federation droids, Qui-Gon comes accross a Gungan named Jar Jar Binks who reluctantly helps the two Jedi by taking them to the underwater city of Otoh Gungan. It is there that Qui-Gon asks the king of the Gungans, Boss Nass for a transport and path to the city of Naboo. It is also with this request that Qui-Gon saves the life of Jar Jar by taking him on as his guide. Upon their arrival to the surface, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan find and free the Queen and her escorts and make their way to a ship. During their escape from the Trade Federation blockade, the Naboo starship was damaged and forced the group to make a landing on the outer-rim planet of Tatooine to make some repairs. Qui-Gon always believed that nothing in the galaxy happened by chance and as time would tell, their landing on this desert planet would show just that.
Once the crew assessed the damage and found that they would need a new hyperdrive in order to take off again, Qui-Gon set off to find the parts needed. Qui-Gon found the parts that he needed but his Republic credits were turned away as a form of payment. Upon his arrival to the shop of a local parts dealer, owned by a Toydarian named Watto, Qui-Gon met a young boy named Anakin Skywalker. Anakin offered to give Qui-Gon, Padme, and their droid shelter for the night. During dinner, Qui-Gon came clean about his business their on Tatooine and asked if their was anyone who could help them. Anakin offered to help by entering his pod racer in the next race for Qui-Gon and his friends, giving them the money they would need. Left with no other option, Qui-Gon agreed. The next day Qui-Gon went to Watto and offered to wager him that Anakin would win the next pod race driving a pod that he had "aquired" and if he did, Qui-Gon would get the parts he needed and in exchange, Watto would get to keep all of the winnings minus the cost of the parts, a bet that Watto agreed to. During the preparations before the race, Qui-Gon overheard Watto taking about another racer named Sebulba. Sebulba had won every race he was in and Watto had bet everything on him. Qui-Gon saw this as an opportunity to free Anakin and his mother, so he bet Watto that Anakin would win and if he did, Watto had to free Anakin and his mother in exchange for the pod if Qui-Gon lost. Watto wasn't willing to make such a bet so Qui-Gon set his sights a little lower, wagering just the boy. Watto proposed that they use a chance cube to decide and with a little help from the Force, the boy was chosen.
Although it was a very tough race, and even though Sebulba had sabotaged Anakin's pod, Anakin was able to win the race along with the parts needed by his friends. After returning home to show his mother the credits they got from selling the pod, Qui-Gon told Anakin that he was free and that he could go with him if he wanted to. Anakin made his decision to go, despite the fact that he may never see his mother again, and went with Qui-Gon back to the Royal Starship. As they returned to the ship, a mysterious assailant dawning black robes and a lightsaber as his weapon attacked Qui-Gon. Only after leaping into the starship as it passed overhead was Qui-Gon able to escape. Upon their return to Coruscant, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan went before the Jedi Council to inform them of the mysterious attacker who Qui-Gon believed to be a Sith Lord, an ancient enemy of the Jedi thought to have been extinct. After dismissing the matter with some disbelief, the Jedi Council sent Qui-Gon and his apprentice back to the side of the Queen for protection. Before continuing with their assignment, Qui-Gon presented Anakin, whom he felt was the Chosen One of the Force to the Council for testing, his goal was to have him admitted to the Jedi Academy for training as a Jedi. After giving Anakin some basic tests to see his abilities in the Force, the Council did admit that the boy had great promise, but was deemed to old to begin training. Although the Jedi Council denied Qui-Gon permission to train Anakin directly, he told Anakin to watch his movements, to pay close attention to what he does, and to absorb what he can.
After returning the Queen to Naboo in an attempt to re-take the Royal Palace, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were confronted by the cloaked attacker from Tatooine, Darth Maul. Thanks to their high level of teamwork, master and apprentice pushed the dark warrior back until they were separated, which left Qui-Gon to fight Darth Maul alone. As the duel progressed, Qui-Gon seemed to have control of the situation, but Darth Maul was just laying in wait for the perfect time to attack. That time came as Qui-Gon tried to strike Darth Maul with a powerful swing of his lightsaber, a swing that Maul blocked then countered with a deadly blow to Qui-Gon, stabbing him through the abdomen. After having to witness the fatal blow to his master, Obi-Wan picks up the battle and continues to fight Darth Maul. Although Obi-Wan started to wear down the Sith adversary, Maul once again was just waiting for the right time to attack. As Obi-Wan and Darth Maul clash their lightsabers, Maul uses his Dark Side powers to push Obi-Wan back and into an exhaust shaft. As Darth Maul taunts Obi-Wan thinking he has defeated the two Jedi, Obi-Wan leaps out of the shaft and with the help of his fallen masters lightsaber, cleaves the dark warrior in half. With his last breath, Qui-Gon made Obi-Wan promise that he would train Anakin, even at the brink of death believing that he was the Chosen One who would bring balance back to the Force. Obi-Wan respectfully accepted his masters request, who then died in the arms of his faithful Padawan Learner. |
