The Planet of the Apes

* * The Planet of the Apes was directed by Tim Burton. It stars Mark Wahlberg and Tim Roth.

If you like totally weird sci-fi, humans dressed up like monkeys, confusing endings, and monkey-human romance, this is the film for you.
If you hate stories that make a limited amount of sense, psychotic jumping monkey people, movies with crappy endings, and Tim Roth, never pay money to see this movie.

I personally thought that this was not really a great movie. I enjoyed the humans in monkey outfits. As far as makeup effects go, this film was pretty phenomenal. It also had a very strong musical score which was entertaining. What I did not like about this movie was I did not know that it was a bad movie until it was practically over. Having never seen the first Planet of the Apes, watching it was brand-new ground to me as far as that goes. Let's just say, I thought that the ending really stunk.
The characters in this movie were not very diverse or layered. In fact, I cannot even remember any of the other characters' names besides the bad guy Thade (Roth). There was Mark Wahlberg (cannot remember the fictional name), whose silent strong guy attitude was the thing that started the entire planet filled with monkeys. (I think). He never developed as a character throughout the entire movie; he started out stubborn and strong-willed, and ended up the exact same way at the end. Then there was Thade who was so unrelentingly evil that I could not relate to his fury on any level. The next character is "Monkey Woman", who helped the humans escape enslavement by the apes. Monkey Woman, whose British accent was kind of freaky, also remained the same static two-dimensional character the entire way through. Then there was the typical beautiful blond woman character who I simply refer to as "Surprised Girl", because that was the only emotion she ever conveyed. The only character in this movie who went through any type of substantial change was the character played by Michael Clarke Duncan.
I gave this movie two out of five stars. As far as music and makeup go, it was a pretty righteous flick. As far as the characters and the story are concerned... it was bad enough for me to take away three entire stars.
