|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adams, Douglas | Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency | Dirk Gently | 1 | Fantasy / humor | Samuel T. Coleridge and electric monks!! Hard to classify, really: humor / fantasy / sci-fi / romance (?) / horror / any other genre, it's probably in here. Oh, for heaven's sake, just read it. Oh, and my ex-boss's boss's boss is Gordon Way. | |
| Adams, Douglas | The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul | Dirk Gently | 2 | Fantasy / humor | Delivery pizza and Thor in London, that's all I have to say. Except, of course, that it's a good book. | |
| Adams, Douglas | The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy | Hitchhiker's | 1 | Sci-fi / humor | 42. A classic British humor series, this trilogy contains 5 books, which is typical of the humor contained therein. If these books don't have you rolling in the aisles, I'm sorry: check your pulse, because you're dead. You may not want to read these and "Good Omens" in close conjunction--you'd end up with a hernia. | |
| Adams, Douglas | The Restaurant at the End of the Universe | Hitchhiker's | 2 | Sci-fi / humor | ||
| Adams, Douglas | Life, the Universe, and Everything | Hitchhiker's | 3 | Sci-fi / humor | ||
| Adams, Douglas | So Long And Thanks For All The Fish | Hitchhiker's | 4 | Sci-fi / humor | An interesting fourth book (of the trilogy)...Arthur gets a sex life and Ford doesn't show up much, not to mention anyone else. | |
| Adams, Douglas | Mostly Harmless | Hitchhiker's | 5 | Sci-fi / humor | This one's even weirder than the rest of the series, and that's saying quite a bit. It has its moments... | |
| Adams, Douglas | The More Than Complete Hitchhiker's Guide | Hitchhiker's | 1-4.5 | Sci-fi / humor | Books 1-4 plus Young Zaphod Plays It Safe | |
| Aldrin, Buzz and John Barnes | The Return | Sci-fi | ||||
| Anthony, Piers | Demons Don't Dream | Xanth | Fantasy | Another in the realm of strung-together puns, this one involves two Mundane kids in a contest for the existance of Xanth. | ||
| Anthony, Piers & Mercedes Lackey | If I Pay Thee Not In Gold | Fantasy | Quite different. I bought it originally because of the odd collaboration: I found it hard to imagine what these two authors would come up with together. Basically, it's a 'bargain with a demon' story with a few twists: for one, the woman who makes the bargain is from an 'Amazon women' society. The demon is also...interesting. | |||
| Asaro, Catherine | Catch the Lightning | Skolian Empire (Althor Selei) | 2 | 7 | Sci-fi / fantasy | |
| Asaro, Catherine | The Last Hawk | Skolian Empire (Kelric Valdoria) | 3 | 1 | Sci-fi / fantasy | While the thought of hunky male in female-dominated society may be appealing, I'd really rather read about Soz. |
| Asaro, Catherine | Ascendant Sun | Skolian Empire (Kelric Valdoria) | 5 | 4 | Sci-fi / fantasy | |
| Asaro, Catherine | Primary Inversion | Skolian Empire (Soz Valdoria) | 1 | 2 | Sci-fi / fantasy | Another series written all out of order. Still, Soz is pretty kick-*ss. |
| Asaro, Catherine | The Radiant Seas | Skolian Empire (Soz Valdoria) | 4 | 3 | Sci-fi / fantasy | |
| Ashley, Mike (ed.) | Historical Whodunits | Mystery | ||||
| Asimov, Isaac | The Foundation Trilogy | Foundation | 1-3 | Sci-fi | Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation All hail Asimov. The original Foundation trilogy introduced psychohistory, in which the actions of the mob can and are predicted and shaped...with a few exceptions. Highly recommended; provides food for thought. |
|
| Asimov, Isaac | The Robots of Dawn | Robots | Sci-fi | |||
| Asimov, Isaac | The Naked Sun | Robots | Sci-fi | |||
| Asprin, Robert | Phule's Company | Phule | 1 | 1 | Sci-fi | Funny! Take off on Bertie & Jeeves in space. |
| Auel, Jean M. | The Clan of the Cave Bear | cave bear | 1 | 1 | Historical fantasy | |
| Auel, Jean M. | The Valley of the Horses | cave bear | 2 | 2 | Historical fantasy | |
| Auel, Jean M. | The Mammoth Hunters | cave bear | 3 | 3 | Historical fantasy | |
| Ball, Margaret | The Shadow Gate | Fantasy | This medieval-elves-meet-modern-day story has a few genuinely interesting twists. | |||
| Ball, Margaret | No Earthly Sunne | Fantasy | A fun read. From the Texas Renn Fest to an old English manor with lots of medieval music; gee, wonder why I liked it. | |||
| Ball, Margaret | Lost In Translation | Fantasy | Modern girl falls into magic, medieval world. The characterizations keep this from being a throw-away pulp fantasy. | |||
| Ball, Margaret | Disappearing Act | Sci-fi | ||||
| Berg, Carol | The Song of the Beast | Fantasy | Dragons. | |||
| Berg, Carol | Transformation | Seyonne | 1 | 1 | Fantasy | More, please. |
| Berg, Carol | Revelation | Seyonne | 2 | 2 | Fantasy | Oh, well. Bogs down in the middle and not as captivating, but it is more of our favorite characters (not enough Lydia, though). |
| Berg, Carol | Son of Avonar | The Bridge of D'Arnath | 1 | 1 | Fantasy | |
| Berg, Carol | Guardians of the Keep | The Bridge of D'Arnath | 2 | 2 | Fantasy | |
| Berg, Carol | The Soul Weaver | The Bridge of D'Arnath | 3 | 3 | Fantasy | |
| Bertin, Joanne | The Last Dragonlord | Dragonlords | 1 | Fantasy | A fun twist on virtually done-to-death dragons: these ones are shapechangers. A rambling story from a novice author, dragonlovers will enjoy it. Engaging characters tend to carry what the plot occasionally lacks. Really, quite good, but I'm waiting until the sequel comes out in paperback. | |
| Bertin, Joanne | Dragon and Phoenix | Dragonlords | 2 | Fantasy | Not a bad second book. Like the first, it tends to ramble and loses itself in subplots about any one of the cast of thousands that populate the story. Well done, but the myriad of characters gets confusing in places and the plot often jumps abruptly in the middle of chapters to other places and characters. Also, Ms. Bertin canNOT get her formal English correct, horribly misusing "thee" in "truedragon" speech. Still, I'm glad I bought the book, as it will bear rereading. | |
| Bester, Alfred | The Demolished Man | Sci-fi / fantasy | ||||
| Bishop, Anne | The Pillars of the World | Fae | 1 | Fantasy | The characters aren't as good as the Jewels, but interesting nonetheless. Would be better if all the major characters weren't complete morons. | |
| Bishop, Anne | The Invisible Ring | Jared | Fantasy | Not as compelling as the Jewels trilogy, but not a bad story. Daemon shows up and there's a reference to Surreal, but no one else recognizable. Takes place before any of the Jewels trilogy. | ||
| Bishop, Anne | Daughter of the Blood | Jewels | 1 | Fantasy | Not for the squeamish, these books are sick and twisted. For all that, they are wonderfully written in a prose that paints pictures--not always pleasant pictures. The characters are some of the best, Saetan and Surreal being my favorites, with a host of others close behind. "Daughter" is an exciting introduction to characters who kept me reading through horrific events. | |
| Bishop, Anne | Heir to the Shadows | Jewels | 2 | Fantasy | A good story that avoids the stigma a middle book of a trilogy usually deserves. All the favorite characters are back--what's not to like? | |
| Bishop, Anne | Queen of the Darkness | Jewels | 3 | Fantasy | Weaker than the previous two books, "Queen" seems rushed. It doesn't flow as well as the others and the events of the second half are hurried and occasionally disjointed. Still, it tells a lot and leaves the reader wishing for more: the hallmark of a good series. | |
| Bradbury, Ray | I Sing the Body Electric | Sci-fi | unread | |||
| Bradley, Marion Zimmer & Andre Norton & Mercedes Lackey | Tiger Burning Bright | Fantasy | Great story, wonderful characters, but... I suppose it is to be expected when 3 authors collaborate on a story, even such talented ones as these ladies. Like code written by too many programmers, there are bothersome inconsistencies: people "learning" information they found in the last chapter and migrating hair colors, for example. But overall, a good story. | |||
| Bradley, Rebecca | Lady In Gil | Gil (Scion Tig) | 1 | 1 | Fantasy | Turns high heroic fantasy on its head by highlighting its stupidities. The heroes are killed heroically and the scholar is left to save the day. |
| Bradley, Rebecca | Scion's Lady | Gil (Scion Tig) | 2 | 2 | Fantasy | The title sort of gave this one away for me. |
| Bradley, Rebecca | Lady Pain | Gil (Scion Tig) | 3 | 3 | Fantasy | |
| Brooks, Terry | Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace | Star Wars | 4 | 1 | Space opera / sci-fi | The kid is annoying and Obi-wan whines. Go watch the movie. Although...once you've seen the movie, some of the scenes that were deleted from the film are here and explain quite a bit. |
| Brown, Dan | Angels & Demons | Mystery / suspense | Admission: I bought this book for the anagrams. The book isn't particularly well written and is fairly unbelieveable in parts (the X-33 stands out), but is engaging and witty. Conspiracy theories, the Illumniati, Vatican City, and advanced science: what's not to like? It's brain candy. | |||
| Brown, Dan | Deception Point | Mystery / suspense | NASA badges don't have departments on them. | |||
| Brown, Mary | The Unlikely Ones | Fantasy | A quest of seven "unlikely ones" that really wanders, even though you know where it will end up. Not bad. Don't read it in an impatient mood. | |||
| Brust, Steven | To Reign In Hell | Fantasy | The revolt in heaven isn't quite what one might expect. At times hilarious, at times morbidly serious, "To Reign" is a captivating story. The characters are well-rounded and are not always in line with their reputations in common biblical lore. 'A damned fine story.' (From the forward by Roger Zelazny.) | |||
| Brust, Steven | Cowboy Feng's Space Bar and Grill | Sci-fi | ||||
| Brust, Steven | The Phoenix Guards | Khaavren | 1 | 1 | Fantasy | What fun! A slightly more modern, fantastical take on Alexander Dumas that left me in stitches. The characters are outstanding and the universe is enjoyable. But this is only for those who are able to 'get into' Shakespeare and the like, as the language is the convoluted, archaic romp the Bard indulges in. They're talking like that for a reason, so either laugh or quit reading. |
| Brust, Steven | Five Hundred Years After | Khaavren | 2 | 2 | Fantasy | Go, Sethra! Oh, right, this is a Khaavren novel, but he meets the Enchantress as well as Aliera--and those two ladies encounter each other. Woo-hoo! The language is less convoluted and playful than "Phoenix Guards" and the story somewhat less of a romp, but nonetheless a wonderful book. |
| Brust, Steven | The Paths of the Dead | Khaavren Romances | 3 | 3 | Fantasy | First volume of the novel "The Viscount of Adrilankha" Typically Brustian, I love Paarfi, very cool. |
| Brust, Steven | The Lord of Castle Black | Khaavren romances | 4 | 4 | Fantasy | Second volume of the novel "The Viscount of Adrilankha" |
| Brust, Steven | Sethra Lavode | Khaavren Romances | 5 | 5 | Fantasy | Third volume of the novel "The Viscount of Adrilankha" |
| Brust, Steven | Brokedown Palace | Khaavren/Taltos | Fantasy | Same universe {Dragaera) as Vlad & Co., with a few references to the others. Rather odd--more folklorish in an unfamiliar vein. The symbolism jumps out, kicks you in the teeth, then asks if you noticed--more artsy, in other words. | ||
| Brust, Steven | Jhereg | Taltos | 1 | 4 | Fantasy | The first book written about the assasin Vlad Taltos, his wisecracking reptilian sidekick Loiosh, and the rest of the gang. Wonderfully dry humor teamed with a quickly moving, always twisting plot make for fun, fast reading. I tentatively recommend reading this series in published order, since Mr. Brust loves playing with his timelines anyhow, but as you will. It's all good. |
| Brust, Steven | Yendi | Taltos | 2 | 2 | Fantasy | Vlad meets his wife-to-be (she kills him) during a mafia-style war in which he is one of the participants. Meanwhile, plots of all other sorts abound. |
| Brust, Steven | Teckla | Taltos | 3 | 5 | Fantasy | Possibly my least favorite of the Taltos series; people start getting consciences and quit talking to each other. How complicating. Not to mention the revolting Teckla (take that as you will). |
| Brust, Steven | Taltos | Taltos | 4 | 1 | Fantasy | You don't think Mr. Brust likes playing with time, do you? Among other things, this is how Vlad first meets Sethra. Sethra is cool. Oh, and the rest of the story is pretty good, too; Vlad and Morrolan visit the Paths of the Dead to find Aliera. |
| Brust, Steven | Phoenix | Taltos | 5 | 6 | Fantasy | Vlad takes a job from the Demon Goddess and learns why it's a good idea to keep your distance from the gods. I'm not sure I enjoyed Vlad's separation from most of the series's other characters for the majority of the action, but the introduction of the Empress as a character was interesting. |
| Brust, Steven | Athyra | Taltos | 6 | 7 | Fantasy | Um, okay. I suppose this is a Taltos novel...sort of. Told mostly from the P.O.V. of a 'young' Teckla, it just sort of sets up the next book. |
| Brust, Steven | Orca | Taltos | 7 | 8 | Fantasy | Wow. I really enjoy this book. Vlad tells part of it, but part of the narration is by Kiera (yay!), a character who only infrequently appears. More, more! Beware, however: there is a surprise at the end of this book that changes everything; I had to go back and read the entire series again immediately (not unusual for me eventually, but this is BIG). And some scenes will never be the same. |
| Brust, Steven | Dragon | Taltos | 8 | 3 | Fantasy | Hm. It's different, definitely. I like the perspective on Sethra as a general (Battle of Barrit's Tomb), and the interaction between the Dragonlord and their minions. Parts of it are confusing (more than the timeline, which is typically Brustian) and leave one to wonder how they will be explained or tied in to by the next books. Mostly takes place just after Taltos, with interludes that are just after Yendi. |
| Brust, Steven | Issola | Taltos | 9 | 9 | Fantasy | Wow. Sethra starts talking and the Jenoine show up and Lady Teldra is cool. The book is far too short, though; it almost makes me regret the money for the hardcover. I will will be much comforted, I think, when the next book or two twists the events of this one into new shapes as I have come to expect from Mr. Brust. |
| Brust, Steven & Emma Bull | Freedom And Necessity | Historical fantasy | Deep. Good story buried in often amusing philosophical arguments. If you can wade through the 19th century-style letters, newspaper clippings, and intellectual quotes, you'll find a plot that offers something new at each reading. | |||
| Bujold, Lois McMaster | The Curse of Chalion | Chalion | 1 | 2 | Fantasy | What a change: a protangonist whose sole wish is to be unnoticed. One of the best parts of this book is that although the goal is to lift the curse of the title, unlike most fantasy the cure (and the curse itself, for that matter) is not clear in the beginning. Instead of the quest for the magical object or evil caster, the story explores the strange metaphysics of its world. The characters are for themost part fun, multi-level, and very human in the midst of quite a dark tale. |
| Bujold, Lois McMaster | Paladin of Souls | Chalion | 2 | 3 | Fantasy | |
| Bujold, Lois McMaster | The Hallowed Hunt | Chalion universe | 3 | 1 | Fantasy | |
| Bujold, Lois McMaster | Cordelia's Honor | Miles Vorkosigan | 1-2 | Sci-fi / space opera | Shards of Honor, Barrayar I really like Cordelia. Most of this series ends up to be about her son, but I entered this series with her. A strong female protagonist who believes in God; whodda thunk? Explores the realities (read: grey areas) of war. |
|
| Bujold, Lois McMaster | Barrayar | Miles Vorkosigan | 2 | Sci-fi / space opera | Cordelia's introduction to Barrayaran society. They don't know what hit them, so they start their civil war anyhow. | |
| Bujold, Lois McMaster | The Warrior's Apprentice | Miles Vorkosigan | 3 | Sci-fi / space opera | Miles's story continued; he was born at the end of Barrayar. A hilarious, heartrending, breathless romp through a civil war. | |
| Bujold, Lois McMaster | The Vor Game | Miles Vorkosigan | 4 | Sci-fi / space opera | Typically Miles. Incapable of creating any sort of useful social camouflage, he bulls through with hilarious style and saves the day, leaving people considerably shaken up in his wake. | |
| Bujold, Lois McMaster | Memory | Miles Vorkosigan | 10 | Sci-fi / space opera | I love this book mostly because it's Simon Illyan's story. He spends most of the other books off-stage or propping up a wall; unfortunately, he is in promenience because, in true LMB style, his "worst thing" happens. | |
| Bujold, Lois McMaster | Memory | Miles Vorkosigan | 10 | Sci-fi / space opera | I love this book mostly because it's Simon Illyan's story. | Bujold, Lois McMaster | Ethan of Athos | Vorkosigan universe | Space Opera | |||
| Bull, Emma | Finder | Fantasy | Although I liked it, I find that this is a book I find hard to re-read. Once you know what happens and what does and does not get resolved, much of the book is dead. Elves on motorcycles are always interesting, however. | |||
| Bull, Emma | War for the Oaks | Urban fantasy | Now I want to go visit Minneapolis. Seriously, the city should pay Ms. Bull for advertisement. There are some great characters in here with adventure and magic and romance. True, it's a typical "elves with author's favorite hobby" story, but it's well done enough to just about transcend the label. | |||

| Cherryh, C.J. | The Faded Sun trilogy | Sci-fi | Kesrith, Shon'jir, Kutath | |||
| Cherryh, C.J. | Fortress in the Eye of Time | Tristen | 1 | Fantasy | I'm really going to have to re-read this, as I didn't get it at all the first time. One more shot for Ms. Cherryh. | |

| Christie, Agatha | Murder on the Orient Express | Murder Mystery | I love Poirot. <g> | |||
| Christie, Agatha | And Then There Were None | Murder Mystery | One of my favorite Agatha Christies; it's the perfect locked-island murder rampage (done tastefully, of course. This is, after all, the sort of book where all car chases are done at 5 miles an hour and everyone stays for tea after). | |||

| Cook, Glen | The Black Company | Black Company | 1 | 1 | Fantasy | This series had so much promise... The first trilogy was the high point of the series. After that, it has it moments, but not all that many. Although, upon re-reading... Oh, dear. I think I may like it. |

| Cook, Glen | Soldiers Live | Black Company | 10 | Fantasy | Okay, I *like* this ending. Well, most of it, anyhow. | |
| Crichton, Michael | Airframe | Suspense | Not very complementary to engineers...well, male engineers, which are apparently the only ones around. Oh, well. Guess I don't exist. But a fairly good story anyhow. | |||
| Deveraux, Jude | Temptation | |||||
| Doyle, Debra & James D. Macdonald | The Price of the Stars | Mageworlds | 1 | 3 | Sci-fi / fantasy | Great space opera! Excellent characters, romping plot--it took me a couple of readings to realize how dark the story is. Lots of violence, magic, muder, vengence, betrayal, true love, engineering, new worlds...but no rodents of unusual size. Gotta love a family like this. Go, Professor! |
| Doyle, Debra & James D. Macdonald | Starpilot's Grave | Mageworlds | 2 | 4 | Sci-fi / fantasy | Like many middle novels, sets up the third book, but introduces enough new characters and new situations for our favorites to maintain interest unflagging. This book introduces the Mageworlders' side of things, which complicates things to a wonderful degree. |
| Doyle, Debra & James D. Macdonald | By Honor Betray'd | Mageworlds | 3 | 5 | Sci-fi / fantasy | The end of the second Mage War is a lot of usually unexpected fun. Gotta love all of the supporting cast just as much as our favorite heroes. I really enjoy the end of the war. |
| Doyle, Debra & James D. Macdonald | The Gathering Flame | Mageworlds | 4 | 2 | Sci-fi / fantasy | Pretty much flatly contradicts everything we thought we knew about the first Mage War, but a good story. If you go back and read the first trilogy, you'll find yourself looking at a few characters in a very different light. Although it comes chronologically before the other books, I recommend reading this in publishing order. Oh, and it has the Prof. |
| Doyle, Debra & James D. Macdonald | The Long Hunt | Mageworlds | 5 | 6 | Sci-fi / fantasy | Short. I don't generally care for books about the heroes' kids; this almost persuades me to change that opinion. I liked it better the second or third time through, but it still ranks below the others in the series. If you miss a book from this series, miss this. |
| Doyle, Debra & James D. Macdonald | The Stars Asunder | Mageworlds | 6 | 1 | Sci-fi / fantasy | The Professor's origins. Really, I mostly liked it for what I knew was to come, which is one reason I recommend this series in publishing (not chronological) order. However, the exposure to life in the Mageworlds is enlightening, even if it does contradict what we thought we knew (are we seeing a pattern? Someone likes the phrase 'history is written by the victors'). |
| Doyle, Debra & James D. Macdonald | A Working of Stars | Mageworlds | 7 | 2 | Sci-fi / fantasy | |

| Elliot, Kate | King's Dragon | Crown of Stars | 1 | Fantasy | I'm really not sure what to think about this series. Like Robin Hobb's "Assasin" series, each book just seems to go on and on. I haven't been much tempted to go back for a second reading; perhaps after the third book comes out in paperback. There are some very interesting concepts, however, and fans of infinite plot twists will enjoy the action. Oh, and for dragon lovers out there, the Dragons are a corps of fighters, not the mythical beasts. Sorry. | |
| Elliot, Kate | Prince of Dogs | Crown of Stars | 2 | Fantasy | The second book is a lot more of the first: plot twists galore, people just missing each other when, if they'd met, everything would have been fine, etc. Interestingly, it is still unclear whose descendant is whose. Unusal to my mind in a second book of a trilogy. | |
| Elliot, Kate | The Burning Stone | Crown of Stars | 3 | Fantasy | Drat it, I *thought* this was a trilogy. Unfortunately, there are at least two more books. Well, at least most of the heritage issues (sorry) have been sorted out. I suppose I'll have to read the next two books, just to find out what happens--yes, this is morbid curiosity. I doubt if I'll be reading this series again, and that's not only due to the length. But we shall see...stranger things have happened; Ms. Elliot may yet pull off the unlikely in her next books. | |
| Ende, Michael | The Neverending Story | Fantasy | The first half of this story is pretty familiar to anyone who has seen the movie... which is all right, since the second half of this book gets infinitely weirder. | |||
| Flint, Eric | The Philosophical Strangler | Fantasy | ||||
| Forsyth, Kate | The Witches of Eleanan | 1 | Fantasy | Not recommended. Everyone 'speaks' in a horrible, headache-inducing backcountry accent, tortuously written out. And the dialog isn't worth it. None of the characters were really engaging. | ||
| Forward, Eve | Villians By Necessity | Fantasy | A great twist on the modern D&D-type heroic quest: this is a quest to restore evil to the world. The by-now archetypical characters are given new life, leading to a fun story. | |||
| Frezza, Robert | McLendon's Syndrome | Sci-fi / humour | ||||
| Friesner, Esther M. | Druid's Blood | Historical Fantasy | ||||
| Gaarder, Jostein | Sophie's World | Fantasy | "A Novel About the History of Philosophy" If you like thinking about what is reality, what is ficition, and what is the world, you'll enjoy this book. The story is woven around a history of philosophy course so if you find that sort of thing tedious, avoid this book! But for everyone else, both the history and the story are told in a very accessible, easy reading style. |
|||
| Gaiman, Neil | Neverwhere | Sci-fi / fantasy | Neil Gaiman has a twisted imagination. This is an uncomfortable read, partly because it occasionally crosses over into horror and partly because the anti-hero is so...so...anti-heroic, I suppose. Which is not to say I don't recommend it, just don't read it if you're depressed or in a particularly good mood 'cause it's not happy. | |||
| Gaiman, Neil & Terry Pratchett | Good Omens | Fantasy / humor | Awesome, hilarious, and outstanding. British humor at its satirical best. Two angels, one from heaven (by way of London) and one who 'sauntered vaguely downwards', have misplaced the Antichrist as Doomsday fast approaches. I laughed until I cried. And I still laugh, every time. | |||

| Greeno, Gayle | Exiles' Return | Ghatti's Tale | 3 | Fantasy | Don't read this if you hate time travel. | |
| Groell, Leslie Anne | Anvil of the Sun | Cloak and Dagger | 1 | Fantasy | So much promise...not a bad first story. | |
| Groell, Leslie Anne | Bridge of Valor | Cloak and Dagger | 2 | Fantasy | I couldn't even get through this one the first time, although I actually wanted to. Such a promising, interesting premise for a series...too bad. | |
| Hamilton, Laurell K. | Nightseer | Fantasy | ||||
| Hamilton, Laurell K. | A Kiss Of Shadows | Merry | 1 | 1 | Fantasy (modern) | Very twisted. A welcome break from her bogged-down Anita Blake (vampire) series, but... I thought it would go back to the tone of the first Blake books, and it does recapture some of the humor, but also brings along the twisted sex and blood themes. If only the characters had been a little less...screwed up. |
| Hamilton, Laurell K. | A Caress of Twilight | Merry | 2 | 2 | Fantasy (modern) | |
| Haydon, Elizabeth | Rhapsody | Rhapsody | 1 | Fantasy | I like these characters; this is a book which gets better when re-read. | |
| Haydon, Elizabeth | Prophecy | Rhapsody | 2 | Fantasy | Is it just me, or is this book a lot of dashing around, trying to set everything up to fall into place at the end of the trilogy? Still, it is pretty fun. | |
| Haydon, Elizabeth | Destiny | Rhapsody | 3 | Fantasy | This book really makes the series, elevating it to greatness at the end...which it then ruins with a weak, weak epilogue. Damn. Achmed has really changed in interesting ways, however, while Grunthor just seems to have been relegated to a necessary plot device. | |
| Heinlen, Robert A. | Starship Troopers | Sci-fi | Nothing like the movie at all (which was a lot of fun, by the way. Go SS Doogie!). Interesting social commentary. Kinda preachy. | |||

| Huff, Tanya | Wizard of the Grove | 1-2 | Fantasy | Child of the Grove, The Last Wizard Amusing. These fantasy stories have an unexpected dose of very modern humor and cliches. The second book is darker, but explores the characters more in depth. |
||
| Huff, Tanya | Summon the Keeper | Keeper's Chronicles | 1 | 1 | Fantasy (modern) | Hilarious, though I keep wanting to smack the main character. The cat's great. |
| Huff, Tanya | The Second Summoning | Keeper's Chronicles | 2 | 2 | Fantasy (modern) | Again, very funny, but wanting to smack people gets worse. |

| Jones, Diana Wynne | Howl's Moving Castle | Fantasy | A funny story, but people seem to act so unpredictably (as I've come to expect of Ms. Jone's books). It gets better upon rereading, so perhaps it's just too subtle for me on first reading. I'll have to think about that. | |||

| Juster, Norton | The Phantom Tollbooth | Fantasy | One of my favorites as a child, this journey through an unremittingly literal world is a wonderfully witty look at the ridiculous in the modern world. A hilarious pantheon of characters wisk a bored child into mundanities taken for granted and stand them on their heads. | |||
| Kanaly, Michael | Thoughts of God | Sci-fi | An interesting mix of murder mystery, snippets of death and ways of dealing with it across the cosmos, and the lab notes of God. | |||
| Kay, Guy Gavriel | A Song For Arbonne | Fantasy | A fantasy set at the end of an age where the women are strong, clever, and beautiful...and so are the men. Hmm. Well, most of them. Anyhow. Music, poetry, and the Court of Love are up against a militaristic religious crusade with assorted love(?) stories thrown in for color. I like to re-read this because Mr. Kay has a knack for writing characters that fit their colorful surroundings. | |||
| Kay, Guy Gavriel | The Lions of Al-Rassan | Fantasy | Many of the comments for _A_Song_for_Arbonne_ apply here as well. Well, except that instead of Germany and France analogues we're dealing with Spain and, well, Spain. I think. That peninsula, anyhow. Again, a book I enjoy re-reading. | |||

| Kerner, Elizabeth | Song In The Silence | Lanen Kaelar | 1 | 1 | Fantasy | More dragons. Fairly well done; I'm looking forward to the next book, if it ever appears. |
| Kerner, Elizabeth | The Lesser Kindred | Lanen Kaelar | 1 | 1 | Fantasy | This sequel is rather disjointed, owing mostly to the narration style which jumps between ten or more characters' POV. The story line is confusing; it's the characters who keep the book moving. I *like* them. |

The Happy Medium would approve! On eof these days, I'll pick up the sequels again (Wind in the Door, Swiftly Tilting Planet, An Acceptable Time, etc.) | |
| Lackey, Mercedes | The Fire Rose | Historical fantasy | A nice little magical story, set in turn-of-the-(last)-century San Francisco. As expected of Ms. Lackey, there are talking animals. I could consider this brain candy, but it really is more of a fairy tale. | |||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Exile's Honor | Fantasy | ||||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Exile's Valor | Fantasy | ||||
| Lackey, Mercedes | The Lark and the Wren | Bardic Voices | 1 | Fantasy | Not the Valdmar universe! A good story with interesting characters that takes periodic potshots at the Catholic Church (the medieval one, of course... uh-hunh) and a few other thinly veiled (but certainly not disguised) institutions. A bit preachy in places, but fun. Personally, I like this first one the best. | |

| Lackey, Mercedes | By The Sword | Valdemar | Fantasy | This is the first book by Ms. Lackey I read--what fun! This one follows Kerowyn from young woman to mercenary and on. | ||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Arrows of the the Queen | Valdemar (Arrows) | 1 | Fantasy | The first Valdemar book to be written, and it shows. Still, a good story with characters who'll show up again. Valdemar is one of those series that you can pick up at any trilogy and enjoy the others, providing you enjoy the first. Telepathic white horses, working magic, swords, and a pantheon of gods--if you like these, you should be all right. This book introduces Talia and Elspeth. | |
| Lackey, Mercedes | Arrow's Flight | Valdemar (Arrows) | 2 | Fantasy | ||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Arrow's Fall | Valdemar (Arrows) | 3 | Fantasy | ||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Magic's Pawn | Valdemar (Last Herald-Mage) | Fantasy | The introduction of Vanyel is intriguing. Providing you have no objection to same-sex relationships, of course. Like Talia, its another 'pile everything on the one really talented (or Talented, if you prefer) individual and see how they snap'. But the vision of an older Valdemar should interest fans of the series and they're pretty good stories of themselves. | ||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Magic's Promise | Valdemar (Last Herald-Mage) | Fantasy | |||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Magic's Price | Valdemar (Last Herald-Mage) | Fantasy | |||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Storm Warning | Valdemar (Mage Storms) | Fantasy | Ooh, new characters. The Empire, Karal, the Karsite priests, and the Blues are fun. I do think there's something fishy about the timeline in Karse, but hey. | ||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Storm Rising | Valdemar (Mage Storms) | Fantasy | |||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Storm Breaking | Valdemar (Mage Storms) | Fantasy | |||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Winds of Fate | Valdemar (Mage Winds) | Fantasy | Elspeth and Darkwind's story. More about the Hawkbrothers (can we say 'Native American'?), some history, and Falconsbane, the bad guy. I don't know, I kinda like the bad guy, up until he starts whining like the rest of them. | ||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Winds of Change | Valdemar (Mage Winds) | Fantasy | |||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Winds of Fury | Valdemar (Mage Winds) | Fantasy | |||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Oathbound | Vows and Honor | Fantasy | Originally a story in the "Sword & Sorceress" anthologies, the book is rather piecemeal--no flow, but fun snippets. Tarma and Kethry are feisty enough to keep you reading. | ||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Oathbreakers | Vows and Honor | Fantasy | More of a flow than the previous one; an engaging adventure. | ||
| Lackey, Mercedes | Oathblood | Vows and Honor (short stories) | Fantasy | Short stories of Tarma and Kethry. | ||
| Lackey, Mercedes (ed.) | Sword of Ice And Other Tales of Valdemar | Valdemar (short stories) | Fantasy | Introduction, Sunlancer, The Demon's Den, Ironrose, Babysitter, The Salamander, A Child's Adventure, Blood Ties, ...Another Successful Experiment, Choice, Song of Valdemar, The School Up the Hill, Chance, Sword Of Ice, In the Forest of Sorrows, Vkandis's Own, A Herald's Honor, A Song For No One's Mourning, Blue Heart | ||

| Martin, George R. R. | A Game of Thrones | Fantasy | Doing the Tolkien thing with the initials? His characters are more likeable (just) than the Hobbitmeister and the plot was interesting, but it completely failed to suck me in. Granted, it also failed to completely suck, but that isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. Basically, unless the next book falls into my lap at a time when I've nothing else to read, I may not get around to finding out what happens. | |||
| McCaffery, Anne | Restoree | Sci-fi | I believe this is Ms. McCaffery's first novel. Not bad, really. | |||
| McCaffery, Anne | The Crystal Singer | Crystal | 1-3 | Sci-fi / fantasy | Crystal Singer, Killashandra, Crystal Line One of Ms. McCaffery's series that hasn't been worn out; there are only these three books. Killashandra is a fun, over-the-top character. Interesting appearances of brain-brawn ships, for those familiar with her other works. No dragons, sorry. |

| McCrumb, Sharon | Bimbos of the Death Sun | Jay Omega | 1 | Mystery / humor | Well...mystery / humor at a sci-fi / fantasy convention. The title, in the tradition of "Chicks In Chainmail", is somewhat misleading: it's what the publishers have decided to call engineering prof James Owen Mega's (a.k.a. Jay Omega and everyone who's laughing is an engineer) hard sci-fi novel. He goes to a con to promote it (in his university town, no less) and chaos ensues, naturally. | |
| McCrumb, Sharon | Zombies of the Gene Pool | Jay Omega | 2 | Mystery / humor | The sequel to "Bimbos", but not as amusing...mostly because it's not at a con, really. More sterotypical fen appear and a few more puns, of course. | |

| Michner, James A. | Space | Fiction | Couldn't get through this; considering the subject matter (Werner von Braun, the German brain trust, and the dawn of the space program), that's a minor anti-miracle. Oh, well. | |||
| Moon, Elizabeth | Sheepfarmer's Daughter | Deed of Paksenarrion | 1 | Fantasy | Very cool 'high' epic fantasy (think friendlier Tolkien: elves, dwarves, magic rings, and humans--but ones you actually care about). The trilogy follows Paksenarrion from sheepfarmer's daughter to mercenary and beyond... This book is where she gets her start. The characters are well rounded and the descriptions well written. | |
| Moon, Elizabeth | Divided Allegience | Deed of Paksenarrion | 2 | Fantasy | A very depressing middle novel at the second half. I admit I tend to skim through this one when I read the trilogy, but only because it is so emotional--it wrings you out. Definitely not mushy, but leads into very dark places: right into the last book. | |
| Moon, Elizabeth | Oath of Gold | Deed of Paksenarrion | 3 | Fantasy | The 'redemption' portion of the trilogy. More fun definitely than the previous one, although I tend to cringe in places. "My lord, if the gods are with us, who can stand against us? You praise your gods, and I'll praise mine, and then we'll fight this evil," sort of thing. Still, a good book. | |

| Moore, Christopher | Practical Demonkeeping | Fantasy / humor | Another hard-to-classify book. An amusing story about a man who controls a demon--or is the demon in control? Described as "a comedy of horrors" and as "Stephen King, Douglas Adams, and H.P. Lovecraft go to a Frank Capra movie ("It's A Wonderful Life"). Thus inspired, they write" this book. Rather like a summer blockbuster: don't expect much from it and you'll be pleasantly surprised. | |||

| O'Brian, Patrick | Master and Commander | Aubrey & Maturin | 1 | Hist. Adv. | My first foray into the genre that (obviously) inspired some of my favorite sci-fi writers has left me wanting more. Like the books of Tom Clancy and David Weber, there's quite a bit of technical talk to skip; once done, the story is a lot of dashing derring-do in which not all goes as the hero(es) would like. It will be interesting to see how the characters develop. | |

| Peters, Ellis | A Morbid Taste For Bones | Brother Cadfael | 1 | 1 | Mystery | The first Brother Cadfael mystery. Cadfael is a Benedictine monk in 13th century England who solves Agatha Christie-style murders. They're wonderfully different from anything else, but after a few books the formula is evident. Still, a good series and definitely worth reading. I recommend reading these in publishing order and NOT reading the back of the book. Following this advice, I'm not going to comment individually on most of these books. |

| Peters, Ellis | The Summer of the Danes | Brother Cadfael | 18 | 18 | Mystery | |
| Peters, Ellis | A Rare Bendictine | Brother Cadfael | 19 | 0 | Mystery | Three short stories of Brother Cadfael, one of which is the story of his entrance into the Benedictine bortherhood. The other two take place within the scope of the rest of the series. I would not say they are up to the standards of the rest of the series, but fans will be interested to read them. I recommend, for the sake of the later stories, reading this in order of publication: between the 18th and 19th chronicles, although it would go well at the end. |
| Peters, Ellis | The Holy Thief | Brother Cadfael | 20 | 19 | Mystery | |
| Peters, Ellis | Brother Cadfael's Penance | Brother Cadfael | 21 | 20 | Mystery | The last Brother Cadfael mystery, whether by design or due to the author's (Ms. Pargeter) death. It makes a fitting ending, although Deacon Mark is not yet ordained. Of a broader scope than its series brothers, "Penance" lends a sense of completion to a satisfying series. |

| Rowling, J. K. | Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Year 1) | Harry Potter | 1 | Fantasy | These are just fun, with over-the-top characters, sound plots, and intricate detail. Harry Potter is sent to Hogwarts, a school for wizards and witches, where the bad guys are trying to get rid of him. Magic lives side- by- uncomfortable- side with the 'present day' world. If you enjoy these, I recommend "So You Want To Be A Wizard" by Diane Duane. | |
| Rowling, J. K. | Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Year 2) | Harry Potter | 2 | Fantasy | Harry's second year at Hogwarts and the bad guys are still trying to get rid of him. Something is attacking students at Hogwarts and many suspect Harry. | |
| Rowling, J. K. | Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Year 3) | Harry Potter | 3 | Fantasy | Harry's third year at Hogwarts and the bad guys are still trying to get rid of him. This time an escaped convict from Azkaban, the wizards' horrific jail, is hunting Harry. | |
| Rowling, J.K. | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Year 4) | Harry Potter | 4 | Fantasy | Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts and...are we seeing a pattern here? A world Quidditch match, the return of Harry's archnemesis, a deadly competition, and Harry's first dance. Over 700 pages, but they go fast. | |
| Rowling, J.K. | Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Year 5) | Harry Potter | 4 | Fantasy | Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts and... Harry's getting very adolescent. | |

| Shinn, Sharon | Summers at Castle Auburn | Fantasy | A fun little story and a romance of the old style. Intriguing characters and a fairy tale atmosphere. I like it. | |||
| Shinn, Sharon | Archangel | Samaria Trilogy | 1 | 1 | Sic-fi / fantasy | An interesting world with fabulous characters. A love story that's not mushy. And flying. |
| Shinn, Sharon | Jovah's Angel | Samaria Trilogy | 2 | 2 | Sci-fi / fantasy | Fantasy turns (predictably) sci-fi with great reflections on what faith and religion is. Also a couple love stories, flight, and a technological revolution. |
| Shinn, Sharon | The Alleluia Files | Samaria Trilogy | 3 | 3 | Sci-fi / fantasy | A social and religious revolution, a love story, more about God, and flying. |

| Smith, Kristine | Code of Conduct | Jani Kilian | 1 | 1 | Sci-fi | A twisting tale of loyalty and betrayal in a world of futuristic, family-dominated politics. A very well-rounded captivating main character with a supporting cast unwilling to remain static. |
| Smith, Kristine | Rules of Conflict | Jani Kilian | 2 | 2 | Sci-fi | I really enjoy the character interactions, although oftentimes I really want to strangle a few of them. Which says good things about the characterization, I think. |
| Smith, Kristine | Law of Survival | Jani Kilian | 3 | 3 | Sci-fi | Um, okay. This one went in some strange directions. |

| Tarr, Judith | Alamut | Aidan & Morgiana | 1 | Fantasy | The same universe as "The Hound & the Falcon": high magic during the Crusades. An elf prince from the British Isles finds adventure and love in the chaos of the Holy Land. Aidan and Morgiana are engaging characters and present the moral dilemmas of religious war from opposite sides of the conflict. | |
| Tarr, Judith | The Dagger and the Cross | Aidan & Morgiana | 2 | Fantasy | Not as engaging as Ms. Tarr's other novels in this universe, this sequel to "Alamut" is the story of how Aidan and Morgiana--Christian and Muslim--finally get married. Some of the characters seem to disappear between this book and Alf's trilogy. | |
| Tarr, Judith | The Hound and the Falcon | Alfred & Thea | 1-3 | Fantasy | The Isle of Glass, The Golden Horn, The Hounds of God Wow. These are wonderful books of high magic during the time of the Crusades. An interesting study of faith, religion, and tolerance coupled with wonderful, amazing characters and moving plots that sweep through the trilogy. Alfred, both a monk and an elf, must come to grips with all that he is and takes the reader along. |

| Tolkien, J.R.R. | The Tolkien Reader | Fantasy | ||||
| Tolkien, J.R.R. | The Hobbit (Prelude) | Lord of the Rings | 0 | Fantasy | I don't know...I just can't get into Tolkien. I can't feel for any of the characters and the plots seem to skip about. Blibo's classic journey is undertaken and the Ring brought back to the Shire, whoop-de-doo. Gandalf's kinda cool in an annoying way, but he's here and gone again. And yet...there's something about Tolkien, isn't there? I'll have to read it again. My precioussssss... | |
| Tolkien, J.R.R. | The Fellowship of the Ring (Part One) | Lord of the Rings | 1 | Fantasy | I'm not going to attempt to summarize these plots...suffice it to say the Ring must be destroyed in the heart of the enemy's domain. Frodo, Samwise, and the gang tramp about. See "The Hobbit" for my opinion of Tolkien. | |
| Tolkien, J.R.R. | The Two Towers (Part Two) | Lord of the Rings | 2 | Fantasy | More adventuring...following Gollum, of all creatures. | |
| Tolkien, J.R.R. | The Return of the King (Part Three) | Lord of the Rings | 3 | Fantasy | That's it? The end? Isn't that cheating? | |
| Turner, Delia Marshall | Nameless Magery | Lisane | 1 | 1 | Fantasy | Very funny and inventive. Great characters. |
| Turner, Delia Marshall | Of Swords and Spells | Malka | 2 | 2 | Fantasy | Not quite as good as the first, but expands the universe and twines with the first story's end, continuing. |

| Weber, David | Path of the Fury | Sci-fi / fantasy | Though the main character exhibits traits recognizable to fans of Mr. Weber's other works, the story has a fascination all its own. Since the main action follows one character 'on her own', the story is not as bogged down in military details as some of his other works are (sorry, military buffs). Fun characters and plot twists. | |||
| Weber, David | The Apocalypse Troll | Sci-fi | This seems to be an earlier work, although published more recently. This may be due, however, to the fact that it takes place in the 'present day' (due to time travel), unlike any of his other novels. A fun story. | |||
| Weber, David | Oath of Swords | Bahzell | 1 | Fantasy | Mr. Weber's first fantasy novel is a success. He creates a Tolkienesque universe that nevertheless has a unique fascination. As usual, the characters are engaging and well-rounded. | |
| Weber, David | The War God's Own | Bahzell | 2 | Fantasy | When Bahzell encounters the War God's religious infrastructure, things are bound to get interesting. More great characters are introduced, including Bahzell's family back home. A solid sequel that stands on its own merits; equally as fun (perhaps more so!) as the first. | |
| Weber, David | Windrider's Oath | Bahzell | 3 | Fantasy | ||
| Weber, David | Mutineers' Moon | Dahak | 1 | Sci-fi | So what if humans were actually decendants of a marooned crew of space naval officers? It would explain a lot... Colin McIntyre finds that just about everything he thought he knew was wrong when he meets Dahak, the computer running the starship that is the moon, and is roped into a battle millenia old. Good characters grace a solid plot based on an absurdly silly premise--or is it so silly? Good fun. | |
| Weber, David | The Armageddon Inheritance | Dahak | 2 | Sci-fi | Having beaten the mutineers on Earth, the threat from space must be dealt with. The questions of what makes intelligence and what constitutes good government are addressed in often surprising ways. I don't really count this as a middle book of a trilogy, since the third book takes place a couple decades in the future, which says a lot for this book, I think. The Empire's fate is discovered. | |
| Weber, David | Heirs of Empire | Dahak | 3 | Sci-fi | A book about the heroes' kids, which I generally object to, but "Heirs" manages it unusually well; in part because the parents are an integral part of the action. As usual, the jacket blurb skews the story, so be warned. But a glimpse of the terror during previous Empire's fall is described. Those who enjoy the events on Pardal might do well to check out Mr. Weber's "Oath of Swords", although they have nothing to do with each other. | |
| Weber, David | War of Honor | Honor Harrington | 10 | 10 | Sci-fi | |
| Weber, David | The Shadow of Saganami | Honor Harrington | 11 | Sci-fi | ||
| Weber, David | On Basilisk Station | Honor Harrington | 1 | Sci-fi | Space opera that makes you want to cheer out loud. This introduction of Honor Harrington is outstanding: a space naval officer given a scut assignment and a backstabbing superior, Honor proceeds to kick rear in a highly satisfying manner, even though she gets her ship shot out from under her. | |
| Weber, David | The Honor of the Queen | Honor Harrington | 2 | Sci-fi | Honor encounters the male-dominated culture of Greyson and proceeds to stand it on its head, getting her ship shot out from under her by the enemy after she's shot up in a Greyson coup attempt. A good look at culture and religious differences and the misconceptions that can ensue. | |
| Weber, David | The Short Victorious War | Honor Harrington | 3 | Sci-fi | The People's Republic of Haven (read revolutionary-era France with USSR fiscal tendancies) tries a 'short, victorious war' on the Manticorans and encounter Honor again, who gets her admiral (but not her ship! ...mostly) shot out from under her. Pavel Young is back. Oh, yeah, and Honor falls in love. But Mr. Weber ought to be taken to task: I don't mind most of his borrowing from history, but Rob S. Pierre is a tad much. | |
| Weber, David | Field Of Dishonor | Honor Harrington | 4 | Sci-fi | A rather depressing novel, as Honor is given more grist for her nightmares. Still, her friends stick by her in some rather unexpected ways. The cover, though...I keep getting asked if I'm reading about Michael Jackson. At least this time her ship stays unshot. | |
| Weber, David | Flag In Exile | Honor Harrington | 5 | Sci-fi | And back on Greyson, not everyone loves Honor either. No one is ambivalent on the subject of Our Favorite Officer, it seems--you either love her or hate her. | |
| Weber, David | Honor Among Enemies | Honor Harrington | 6 | Sci-fi | Honor's Manticoran 'rehabilitation'. A rambling plot; the most interesting aspect of this novel is that it's told in part from the enlisted persepective, rather than the officers'. The view below-decks is enlightening and somewhat frightening. Also introduced as characters are the Andermani (hilarious!) and the Manitcoran merchants are back (Hauptman again). I hope to see more of Mr. Wanderman in the future. | |
| Weber, David | In Enemy Hands | Honor Harrington | 7 | Sci-fi | Honor is captured by the Peeps. I said a few books ago that if the sub-plot with Admiral White Haven went in this direction, I was going to scream. I'm sorry to say that my vocal cords got the exercise I dreaded. | |

| Weber, David & Eric Flint | Crown of Slaves | Zilwicki | 1 | 1 | Sci-fi | Honorverse |
| Weber, David et al | More Than Honor | Honor Universe (short stories) | 1 | Sci-fi | Anthology; and rather uneven. Not all the stories are by Mr. Weber, although the one by him is interesting: Honor's ancestor is the first to meet a treecat. | |
| Weber, David et al | Worlds of Honor | Honor Universe (short stories) | 2 | Sci-fi | Anthology again. | |
| Weber, David et al | Worlds of Honor #3: Changer of Worlds | Honor Universe (short stories) | 3 | Sci-fi | Anthology, but better than expected. This may be due to the fact that 3 of the 4 stories were written by Mr. Weber and the fourth was done by Eric Flint, whose work I've been meaning to pick up. "Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington" suffers from Weber's Harrington Formula: i.e. she somehow gets into command and, against all odds, kicks rear end, but the rest are different enough to make up the deficiency. | |
| Weber, David & Steve White | Insurrection | Starfire | 1 | Sci-fi | Like most series based off of computer games, this one's a little shaky. In fact, I'm not positive the books in this series all take place in the same universe. I'm going to go so far as to not recommend this series. | |

| Wells, Martha | Wheel of the Infinite | Fantasy | Hard to figure out what is and is not possible in the magic system presented, but the one-liners are great. The story isn't bad, either, and the characters are good. | |||
| Wells, Martha | The Death of the Necromancer | Valiarde | 1 | Fantasy (historical) | Sometimes hard to follow but the characters are engaging and the end is what the book was written for. More could have been done with the plot, but it's worth reading. | |
