NFL Draft, Day 1
ESPN's reporting that Oakland will be selecting JaMarcus Russell as the #1 pick overall. They were reporting this at 11 AM. Better than last year when we knew that Mario Williams would be going first overall to Houston three days before the draft. Official announcement of first pick overall in eight minutes. There's been talk about Oakland trading Randy Moss and the first pick to the Packers or another team, but they took LSU QB JaMarcus Russell, as was reported by ESPN about an hour and a half ago. (Randy Moss not a team player? That's news??) WR Calvin Johnson, the one many have said is the best player in the draft, has been selected second overall by the Detroit Lions, with the Cleveland Browns now on the clock. NFL Network is reporting that Johnson could later be traded in the same manner that Manning and Rivers were traded a couple of years ago. I fail to understand why. Brady Quinn is not getting his wish as the Cleveland Browns take tackle Joe Thomas with the third pick. You're better off, kid. Cleveland is where QBs go to die. Gaines Adams is the first defensive player to be taken in the draft. Tampa Bay took him with the fourth pick. The Cardinals have selected Levi Brown, a tackle that some people figured was on the Steelers' shortlist. Matt Millen just got interviewed on Lions' cam on the NFL Network. Thought another WR would make the Lions a better team. Not without an O-Line, Lions. Sorry. Redskins picking safety LaRon Landry? Adam Schefter says that would give the Redskins the most formidable safety tandem in the league. No way. Polamalu/Smith is better (Biased? Me? Nah). RB Adrian Peterson is going to Minnesota. Stay off Lake Minnetonka, dude. DE Jamal Anderson is going to Atlanta. I heard he was on our list as well. There's another one gone. He's a 4-3 guy anyway. QB Brady Quinn is still waiting. They were talking about the last QB left in the green room on the NFL Network, and how last year it was Leinart, the year before Aaron Rodgers, and the year before that Ben Roethlisberger. Ben falling to the Steelers at #11 was the best ever. Thank you, Cleveland and everyone else for being so stupid. For real. Dolphins take Ted Ginn, leaving Quinn for someone else. People are wondering how far Quinn is going to fall before he gets picked, since it doesn't look like the next few teams on the clock need a QB. We certainly don't. Need a decent third-string in case Ben and Charlie go down, but no way do you spend a first-round pick on a third-string QB. Houston just took Amobi Okoye. Dude is, like, 19. For real. He's 19, after graduating high school at 16, and he's going pro. Kid's going to be the Sidney Crosby of the NFL. I can see it now. 49ers just grabbed Patrick Willis. Frack. Apparently, Brady Quinn has been taken to the Commish's green room. He must have been tired of seeing him on the big screen every five seconds. RB Marshawn Lynch is going to Buffalo. Definitely a need after losing Willis McGahee to the Baltimore Ravens. The Rams are now on the clock. And the Rams just took DE Adam Carriker. I've heard rumors about us trading down if we couldn't grab Carriker at 15. It's time to see if there's any truth to those rumors. Jets just traded up to the 14th pick. So the Jets took Pitt CB Darelle Revis, someone we wanted badly. And then we took LB Lawrence Timmons at pick 15. The Steelers FO must know something the rest of us don't. Hopefully it'll work out. The Packers just took DT Justin Harrell. The Broncos are now on the clock after trading up. And with the pick, they took DE Jarvis Moss. The Cincinnati Bengals have taken CB Leon Hall...makes me wonder how much of a criminal record Hall has. NFL Network is reporting on which teams might be interested in drafting Brady Quinn, including Kansas City, Baltimore, and Detroit. In regards to Detroit, one has to wonder if they really wanted to draft Brady Quinn, why they wouldn't have done so with the second pick. But that would have meant Calvin Johnson going elsewhere, so the decision makes sense. Guess this proves that Quinn is not the QB that everyone thought he was. Safety Michael Griffin is going to Tennessee. The New York Giants are now on the clock. Giants are taking CB Aaron Ross. I'm amused at the comments that New York fans are clueless. Because sometimes, it's true. Cleveland Browns are trying to trade up. Apparently, they've just now decided they want Brady Quinn. Right. And they just got him, after trading picks around with the Dallas Cowboys, and the Jacksonville Jaguars drafting safety Reggie Nelson. Kansas City is now on the clock. They have drafted WR Dwayne Bowe, who was a target of JaMarcus Russell at LSU. According to Rich Eisen on the NFL Network, the Chiefs have not named a starting QB for next season, as Trent Green's future is uncertain. Safety Brandon Meriweather has been drafted by the New England Patriots, as the first round of the draft is winding down. We've got eight more picks to go, and then I'll pretty much be covering the Steelers draft for the rest of the rounds. After the first round, people really don't know who the prospects are anyway. People are calling the Steelers' draft a bust already. I myself am not too happy about the Timmons pick, but we'll just wait and see how the rest of the draft pans out. And who knows...Timmons might pan out. So let's not jump off the bridge just yet. Another pick has been announced, this one for the Carolina Panthers - LB Jon Beason. Lawrence Timmons is being called a younger version of Joey Porter. Not bad. Is it September yet? Dallas took DE Anthony Spencer, followed by New Orleans taking WR Robert Meachem. San Francisco has taken OL Joe Staley, and Baltimore has taken guard Ben Grubbs. They had wanted Brady Quinn, but obviously didn't get him. They must not have as much confidence in Steve McNair and Kyle Boller as was previously thought. San Diego is now on the clock. San Diego has chosen WR Craig Davis from LSU. Davis is the fourth player from LSU to be chosen in the first round today, according to the NFL Network. Chicago has chosen TE Greg Olsen, which is funny, because he was wearing a Bears hat for a long time before the Bears were even picking. Guess he wants to go to Chicago really badly. And Indianapolis has chosen WR Anthony Gonzalez, bringing an end to the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, the longest first round in draft history, apparently. Round 2, Steelers are on the clock. Sidney Rice is gone to Minnesota, Justin Blalock is also gone, to the Falcons. And Tony Ugoh is gone to Indianapolis. So we've drafted LaMarr Woodley DE from Michigan. Two defensive picks. I'd love to see some OL picks, but what are the chances? Round 3, Steelers are on the clock. Talk is either Tony Hunt or Michael Bush, with center Ryan Kalil gone to Carolina. Instead, the Steelers take Minnesota TE Matt Spaeth. At 6'7, he'd make a hell of a target, but I read somewhere he's used more for blocking. Which is good, too. I believe that's all for tonight. It all starts up again tomorrow at 11 AM with rounds 4-7. 2007-04-28 15:53:09 GMT
