Things that made me thankful in 2000

December 14, 2000
I had dinner with my official adopted drawgroup. It was great to see everyone although we were all worn out by finals. Ekene and I were talking about how Yoruba and Igbo names always mean something. And that nowadays Igbo people just name their children the names they used to in Igbo in English. So Ekene knows someone named Thank God. Carmen then suggested that someone be named Bloody Skull. Esther piped in with the highly original "Buffalo Ears". Unfunny stuff when you think about it, but tonight it had me in tears. literally.

I've been inviting people to Impact since March. I started to get tired last week- which is probably the more crucial time for getting people's final decisions. I got this email from someone at Stanford in Santiago, and she's totally excited about Impact. Which made me totally excited about Impact and just remember why i want people to go so much.

people who share the same vision, passion. My friend came down from her town and we went recruiting at some universities in the area. It was so much fun. I'd do this stuff by myself because i believe in it so much. But i'm thankful to have friends to do it with.

SGC. Stanford Gospel Cboir. We "ministered" at University Public Worship on Sunday and all week long i've been singing- "O lord how excellent... Jesus excellent is thy name." I'd say Gospel Choir is my second favorite group activity of the week. it's such an awesome time of worshiping God thru singing. i'm thankful that this year it's a possibility, cuz i no longer have a friday night conflict.

I have bunches of things to be thankful for. I went to Stanford Hair to have my hair straightened. That was a trauma of an order i never imagined. Basically the stylist didn't do what i asked for (comb, trim my hair) plus when it was done it looked lame. Out of this experience i got to bond with Danielle & Stephanie. Danielle spent 2.5 hours Sat. night pressing my hair. Monday night Stephanie helped me get it a little straighter. Everyone has been really supportive and i have recd many offers for help in the future.

the exact text i recd in an email today...

God provided funding, God provided funding, God provided funding!!!! Praise God He provided funding!!! THANK YOU for your prayers! God is so faithful!!

Great is thy faithfulness, Oh God my Father. There is no shadow of turning in thee. Thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not, as thou has been thou forever shalt be. Great is thy faithfulness, Great is thy faithfulness, morning by morning new mercies i see. All i have needed thy hand has provided, Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.

Driving back from the Campus Crusade for Christ retreat the driver put down the top of her BMW convertible. It was nice to have the wind blowing through her hair, music blasting, some of us screaming as we sang along with the tape. I love how we're totally silly, so we put up her hands... pretending like we were on a roller coaster. And then i had the brilliant idea to stand up, with the car in motion. It went well for a few seconds, then i tried to turn around and was slammed back into the seat so quickly i still don't really know what happened. Probably some physics/ gravity thing. Anyhow it was a very fun car ride.

I went on a retreat this weekend. The theme was trusting/following God. I really enjoyed all the talks but 2 points really "grabbed" my heart. First, following Jesus is not about your strength or willpower but about who Jesus is. Second, ways to follow for a lifetime; so that you'll run the journey of life with endurance. The examples she used were kinda gripping and i just cried at the picture of love & dedication it painted. Two men decided to spend their years at home with their wives. The women had alzeheimer's and required full time care. Yet, they refused to place them in homes because the women were only happy when around the husband. They felt it would totally devastate them to be around strangers.

I'm glad i went because it gave me perspective on a verse i've been meditating on: Hebrews 12:2. In addition i got to hang out with some cool folks, but not as much as i would have liked...

Monday evening around 4:30 ish i met with Carmen and Ekene to prep for our bible study the next evening. Around 11pm we walked Carmen back to her room. It(the prep time) was probably slightly inefficient, however the discussion was invaluable. We shared about our struggles of the past summer, for me the last year, and it was such an encouragement to hear how God's working in our lives despite our feelings to the contrary. It was awesome for me to be able to spend hours talking, laughing, crying.

Thank God, I don't have to be perfect.

"Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance
I just wanna praise Ya, just wanna praise You
You broke the chains, now I can lift my hands
And I'm gonna praise Ya, I'm gonna praise You"
MaryMary
I'm really thankful to God for allowing me the opportunity to praise him. I enjoy this song cuz it makes me dance, lift my hands, and praise him.

Ice cream at every meal. I'm working this meal plan "Deal".

October 10, 2000
There we were after KCPC (Korean Central Presbyterian Church)- chillin'. I started talking to Jieun and found she had some free time monday so i forced her to come have lunch with me. I really enjoyed hanging out with her at lunchtime. My only regret was the brevity of the encounter.

i am so thankful that i have a wonderful, wonderful roommate. I can not even begin to tell you how awesome it is.

Yesterday i was walking home from class. I was engaged in discussion with two of my friends from way back. We're all seniors taking bio41 (yeah!). Anyhow, from behind me someone calls in a hesitant voice, Kemi? I turn around and find someone i worked with three summers ago at Summerbridge. We were both headed to the post office so we spent time catching up. My summerbridge summer was probably my second favorite summer in terms of people and work. I'm always a little sad that i don't keep in touch with folks, so it was a very pleasant surprise to see her. She's working on her masters at Stanford, so i'll be seeing her all year long.

I had a really good talk with my roomie today. it's just awesome to be able to fall asleep dreaming about service ideas, similarity between families,friendships... Sometimes i forget how much i love to talk. it's awesome to have someone willing to listen.

My Friday 6:30am goodbye breakfast. It rocked, and i got a very pretty flower out of it.

Sunday night, i found out that one of my random roommates was actually a good friend. We were so happy to be reunited despite the quirks of the Stanford housing draw that tried to seperate us..

Tuesday, received an email from someone i met during my summer overseas.(over a year ago).

i'm back

Yesterday, my coworkers came back from lunch at jack in the box. They were in hushed conversation so i ignored them. One of them looks up and notices me at my desk. She walks over and explains that they got someone fries and a jumbo jack. All he wanted was fries so they needed to dispose of the jumbo jack. My response: I would love to help you out. As a result, i received a free meal. Loved it.

Love found a Saturday African evening service in Novato. It's super far away but it was a really cool service. None of the songs we sang were in English and i think it's a predominantly Kenyan congregation. but anyways there's just something so cool about joining with fellow believers, even when you don't share the same language.

Thanks to Eric Mao for designing the Read-thru-the-Bible-by Email and to Danny for having a link on jack which is where i found it. I told my friend Love about it and she signed up a few seconds after that. So the next day the reading was from I Corinthians 13. pretty cool, heh?

I had so much fun dropping Alice off at the airport. She was talking about her mom. It sounds like her mom is pretty spunky and has a ton of sayings. There are all Chinese sayings so Alice had to translate every 10 seconds.

September 8, 2000
I'm supposed to get to work at 7:30 but usually i wake up at 7:30 or 7:20. today i got out of bed at 6:55. I was so excited to have so much time to get ready. i did the dishes, mopped the floor, took out the trash and other things. Maybe i'll wake up early from now on.

September 6, 2000
I got a huge check in the mail today for my university bill along with a note/prayer.

September 5, 2000.
I am thankful for being alive after falling asleep at the wheel for a few seconds and having my car drift into the nest lane. It terrified me into alertness, and made me praise God for his hand of protection over my life.

September 5, 2000
I got an email from Ramon. It made me happy to hear from him cuz Ive missed him and it was so unexpected, it made my day.

September 2000
I appreciate the good friends I have now because not too long ago I couldnt really say I had friends. However I have always had a friend, so for that I will forever be grateful. But one thing Ive noticed is that many of my friends are very outgoing, very talkative and very loud. When they all get together, I have to shield my ears.
