TWO JAPANESE HAIKU

The lighning flashes!                                      A lightning gleam:
And slashing through the darkness,                      into darkness travels
   A night-heron's screech.                                          a night heron's scream.

Matsuo Basho (1644 - 1694)

The falling flower                                          Fallen flowers rise
I saw drift back to the branch                               back to the branch -- I watch:
     Was a butterfly.                                                    oh . . . butterflies!

Moritake (1452 - 1540)
