The manual should describe the essentials of survival in a foreign or hostile environment and options for materials and strategies using information found on the Web. Students should review the information at the following sites and create a maunal with a creative cover, table of contents, illustrations and text describing the elements of survival. The poster should include the scientific name of the shell chosen, a background of where the chosen shell is found and the symbolic meaning of the shell in the novel. Materials used should include poster-sized paper, markers, colored construction papter, scissors and glue in a non-technical environment. As a response to literature, the poster will advance a judgment that demonstrates a comprehensive grasp of the significant ideas of the symbol, support key ideas through accurate and detailed references to the novel, and assess the impact of the symbol's ambiguities. The information should be brief and factual and include similar situations to the novel, but it should advance a judgment that shows a comprehensive grasp of theme, supports key idesas, and demonstrates awareness of theme. The objective of this activity is to visit links related to the Holocaust during World War II, and gather facts that may relate to the development of the novel using a Learning Log format. Students will connect with the Holocaust Center and record important information on the events elading up to and during World War II related to Hitler's rise to power and his treatment of the Jewish people. This information should be compared to Jack's rise to power and boys' treatment of Ralph and Piggy. The "Note-Making" section of the learning log should make connections to the novel (i.e. Jack and the hunters' treatment of the other boys). This log will be used in an essay format as a comparative paper connecting the events of the novel to the real events of the Nazi takeover of western Europe. |
