I have always found it helpful to watch how other artist do things.
These videos are recorded live in my home / studio. They are not meant to be a follow along video. But I have included a copy of the painting (a small inkjet print) and a line drawing (11 x 15) is included with the video.
Everything is recorded from start to finish...except the the use of the hair dryer.
The VHS format videos:
Covers wet in wet beginning - where selected colors are just
placed on wet paper. This is a great technique to use if you have
trouble painting backgrounds. OR just getting started!
Then on dry paper the process of building layers many layers of
color (called glazing) makes the subject achieve its 3
dimensional form. Whenever you apply color to one area it affect
everything around it. With the slow building of thin layer of
color you have control. Please not that I do not stay in any one
area too long. This is one of the biggest mistakes I see my
students make -
The watercolors are painted in
real time with camera being turned off for blow drying and stop
to study as to what to do next...The camera is looking straight
on to the watercolor paper which fills the frame.
It is painted live, which means...you will hear some background
noises [better described as Life Happening] a few second of a dog
collar tags jingling and the chimes of my clock.
There is no editing in the video other than stop and rewind and sometimes that is not perfect.
The Supplies used for this demonstration:
1/4 sheet of Winsor Newton 140 lb Cold Press Paper (11x15)
Robert Simmons Sienna Series [size 14 / size 16] Pointed Round
Viva Paper Towels
A typical folded palette - With paint squeezed out and ALLOWED TO SET UP and become HARD. This is very important to this method of controlling the amount of water and paint on the brush.
Professional Grade colors: Winsor New Gambodge, Perm Rose, Daniel Smith Deep Scarlet, Daniel Smith Sap Green, Winsor Emerald, French Ultramarine, and Schmincke Delth Blue.
NOTE If you do not have these colors e-mail me and I will help you decide which colors (you already own) would be a good substitute.
