Silver City Snowshoe February 14-16: The Idaho Outdoors group snowshoed into Siver City, Idaho and stayed at the old Idaho Hotel for two nights. The Idaho Hotel was moved to its current location in 1866 from neighboring Ruby City. Silver city is a fantastic "ghost town" that is lovingly cared for by the current property owners and the winter watchman who gave some of us a tour of the town's structures. We were told that in its heyday, the fantastic noise of the stamp mills could be heard for miles around the city. In the deep snow, the buildings quietly stood as proud monuments of Idaho's mining history. It is recommended that you visit Siver City between May and September when the snow is gone and the roads are open. Snowshoeing in is fun, but be careful, there are many dangerous open mine shafts surrounding town. The hotel is generally open in the summer months. Call Roger and Jeri, the hotel owners, for accomodation information : (208) 583-4104.

Honeycombs, Southeast Oregon April 16-18: Friday night we camped at the Owyhee Reservoir launch site. There was a group of men lashing canoes together in the darkness to be pulled by motorboats 10 miles to our base camp at the Honeycombs. The next morning two fishing boats pulled six canoes and one kayak holding 13 people up the reservoir. Another motor boat, filled to the gills and a sail boat made their way in to the base camp. Lastly one Idaho Outdoors member flew his plane into a nearby strip and rafted across the reservoir to camp. This was a very complex entrance for the outdoors group, we like to do things big sometimes. After setting up camp we headed out on various hikes. I believe we had a total of 27 or 28 people. I joined the more advanced hike as I don't know when to say when, I seem to get a rush out of the challenge. It doesn't take a genoius to figure out why this place is named the Honeycombs. I wouldn't recommend doing this one in the heat of summer, this is definately a springtime hike.

Osprey Yurts near Donnelly, ID March 2004: My mom flew in from Chicago for a little vacation and I wanted to take her on a trip to meet some of my new friends and to see some of the fun things I was doing. I got her in snowshoes for the first time and we walked around the Yurts near Lake Cascade where the trees were covered with beautiful ice crystals.

Succor Creek Oregon May 1-2: This is actually at a little car campground that gets lots of visitors, but the canyon is pretty enough to make it worth the visit. Brad and I went on a little overnight to try some geocaching. Spanish Charley's grave was the last stop on a fun series of geocaches. After finding the grave, a grumpy old rattlesnake gave us his warning and quite a show. Again, I wouldn't recommend the desert canyons for summer trips, I'll bet it was in the 90's by the time we got all the way out to the gravesite.

Work Time, Archaeological Survey in Lassen National Forest, June 2-7: Yes, I have a job. I don't just go on fun trips all the time. I also have a fun job.
Sawtooth Mountains July 8th-13th: I felt that I haden't been challenged enough lately, so I joined 3 other Idaho Outdoors folks for a six day backpack from Redfish Lake to Granjean via the Goat Creek drainage and several alpine lakes in the Sawtooth mountains. I was told that after this trip, I'm spoiled for all other alpine lakes~ they were amazing.

We snowshoed during the days working up good appetites. We later met in the hotel saloon in the early evenings to warm up around the ornate old wood burning stove where we piled our wet gloves and boots to dry. Jeri and family served us hearty homemade meals that we ate at one big table, listening to ghost stories under the antique lamps while the snow silently fell outside. A nice Silver City website is: historicsilvercity.com
We call this one "whack-a-mole"
This is at the Idaho Oregon border. Being a native Chicagoan, I just love this shot. The state of Idaho depends on how you look at it.
My crew: Zak, Trish, Zump, and Colin; hamming it up for the camera.
Spanish Charley reincarnated?
We fought our way through manzanita for hours, I call this one "where's waldo?"
A cinnamon black bear hamming it up for the crew.

Mt. Lassen used to be 10 times larger before several hundred eruptions.
My tripmates: Kelly, Aaron, and Leo.
Aaron helped me navigate my way down from the top, directly above his head. We also climbed the peak at the top left.

Kelly and I did the dishes this night and were so overwhelmed by the mosquitoes that we hid out in the tents waiting for them to go away...they never did.
Um... this was salon day, people do wierd things when they're in the backcountry too long... Hey, I got my hair washed by three guys, sounds like an exotic shampoo commercial doesn't it?
Aaron and Leo over Packrat Lake.
The guys made sure I climbed this unnamed peak over Warbonnet Lakes, We were at 10,033 feet, and I appear to be conquering my fear of heights. I have my tripmates to thank for a wonderful time.

Dugout Dicks July 24th 2004: Richard Zimmerman is one amazing guy, I think he's got the whole "going feral" thing down. Just look up Dugout Dick Idaho on the web to find out a lot about him. Basically he's 88 and in '48 he started digging out his "caves"; he lives in one and rents out the others.
Me, Dick and Brad Benz. I didn't realize someone lived in this one untill we were leaving and a shadowy figure ducked in the door.
You can see these from US 93 across the Salmon River, I think there's enough room for a whole group of Idaho Outdoors members to stay.
It was worth the stop to meet the legend. This trip inspired me to visit Jesco White in West Virginia.
I wonder who lives here...
