December 2000
Well - I am starting this diary late, near the end of January,  so I will have to think back.

We decided to start trying in November and I started reading everything I could.  We bought a book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and purchased a basal thermometer to chart my temperatures.   I also joined an email list from www.preconception.com - which was the best thing I could have done.  A group of ladies from all backgrounds and walks of life all striving for the same thing, a baby.  I received more information and support there than I could have gotten anywhere else - and made some wonderful friends (some of whom are going through pregnancy along with me).

This pregnancy started out rather dramatically when I contracted a bad case of Salmonella poisoning while home in Canada for Christmas (my advice: avoid the Cheers restaurant at LAX).  It was too early to tell if we were pregnant or not - so we were obviously very worried. We hadn't told anyone at all we were trying so we had to keep the worries to ourselves - which was beyond hard.  Perhaps my relatives are more intuitive that I gave them credit for because as we were on our way out the door for a trip to the emergency room, my aunt turned to my grandmother and said "There really isn't any need of being this sick unless you are pregnant" or something to that effect.

The secret was not secret for long as the doctor at the ER spilled the beans to my mother and sister as they waited with me.  I had told him that I was possibly pregnant in order to avoid being given any drugs that might be harmful.  He obviously was not thinking when he announced this to all listening later on, if only I had a camera to record their faces immediately after the words left his mouth! Priceless.......
