The book opens on an average day in the Daventry castle. When Rosella doesn't feel like going to a wedding with her parents, she plays sick in order to stay home. After the rest of her family has left, she uses her position to run Daventry in an all too bratty way. (Hense the controversy.) But when she orders the removal of a magical tree stump, the land is thrown into chaos, as hundreds of evil creatures begin swarming from the hole which the tree stump once blocked. Now it is up to Rosella to save the country, and try not to get caught by her parents!
