Penned by Craig Mills, The Floating Castle was the first novel in the King's Quest novel series. Like all the King's Quest novels, this one recieved very little public acclaim, outside the already avid King's Quest fans, and even then, the reviews varied from loving it, to hating it. Criticised for abandoning it's roots, and abandoning the creator, Roberta Williams, who had very little to do with the actual plot.

A captivating story line, however, The Floating Castle tells the story of Prince Alexander's attempts to save his father's life. After a vicious storm brews in Daventry, preceeding the arrival of an evil mage, the King's soul is stolen. It is now up to Alexander to track down the evil wizard and restore his father to the once proud man he once was.

In my opinion, this novel beautifully captures the feel and essence of King's Quest. Though it is regretful that Roberta Williams did not have a large roll in it's production, it is a wonderful story, and an excellent addition to any King's Quest fan's library.
