| Unfortunately Nell and I did not hit it off for quite a few years, mainly because she could not understand why a 19 year old girl would be interested in a 32 year old man with three daughters and if I am really honest I was frightened of her. After I actually stood up for myself and answered her back we got on fine, pity I did not do it sooner. I think both of them forgot sometimes that Brian was grown up and on numerous occasions when we visited them after a short time Brian would say"come on Jean we are going home" . She always found it hard to accept the fact that we had five children and where we went they came too. This did get better as they grew up. Albert, I always got on alright with although when there were disagreements Nell would always say it was Albert who had said it. They as a couple disagreed quite often and could go for weeks not speaking and unfortunately they were not talking when Albert said he did not feel good and then had a heart attack, from which he died two days later. Nell stayed on in the bungalow in Herne Bay that they had retired to and was still there when we got a call to say she was coughing blood and had been taken to hospital with a suspected perforated ulcer. We travelled down the same day and on the following day they operated to try and stem the bleeding but she did not regain conciousness and died that evening. This was in January 1983. |
