| Mum and Dad were married on the 4th November 1939 at Dartford Registry Office both aged 26. As far as I know they lived with my maternal Grandparents at that time as that was where I was born in 1943. I am not sure what year Dad was actually called up but I know he was in Burma and Malaya at least between 1942 and 1946 as I was three when I first saw him. Mum did I remember work at some point even after I was born. When she married she was a sub Postmistress assistant and I can remember as a very small child going with her to work at a shop at Bexleyheath Clock Tower called Penny Son and Parkers. After Dads return we continued to live in Chapel Road until I was six when we moved to Lavernock Road. As far as I know they were quite happily married, I can remember disagreements but even when she kept "running away" he always went and got her and divorce in those days of course was as far as I know never mentioned. They were good parents, I never went without but they certainly did not spoil me. I remember them saving and we had two holidays in those early years, one to Sidmouth in Devon and one to Hastings. For as long as I can really remember mum would stand rubbing her side and in November of 1955 when I returned from School Dad told me he was taking mum to the doctors. Unfortunately it was a bit late to do anything for her and she died on January 9th 1956. Dad never as far as I know never had any thoughts on remarrying so stayed a widower until his death in 1985. |
