FARM TOUR TIPS
The first question a farm tour novice may ask is, "How do I tour a farm?"
*** Choose a farm you want to visit.
The Blood-Horse online has a great listing of most of the thoroughbred farms in Kentucky. If you want to see a specific horse, the internet is a great place to find out where he is located.
Tours are usually only about a farm's stallions. If you want to see a mare, contact the farm to see if arrangments can be made to do so.
*** Call ahead.
Most farms do tours on an appointment-only basis.
*** Be on time.
Chances are, you won't be the only person touring the farm on any given day. If you are late, it will push back other groups' times.
*** Don't Pet
Stallions can be dangerous and unpredictable. Your guide will usually tell you when you can pet, but if not, don't chance anything! Ask first!
*** Ask Questions!
Guides love sharing their knowledge.
***** Tip Your Guide! *****
Tours are free, but it is an unwritten rule to tip your guide. If you really enjoyed the tour, tip accordingly. Your guide will appreciate it. $20 is good, but some farms suggest more. Ask when you make your appointment.
**** Dress Appropriately
Comfortable shoes are a must. If touring in the summer, shorts and t-shirts are OK, but the nicer the better.
**** Keep your camera ready
You never know when you'll have a "Kodak Moment"!
