 This page was first written at Jan. of 2001.  The pages linked from here  are going to be pages for setiathome individual users who are about to race on the rank in "TOP users in somewhere".  I want to show them how my analyser machines work and to encourage them more enthusiastically to support the SETI@home research.
  Also, the pages will be helpful examples to other setiathome users who are not yet interested in their rank, but want to automatically download, analyse and upload work-units in "seldom ISP-connected environment".

K7S5A and CT-7SID
 From the Sep 2001, I prepared another rack for ELITE's K7S5A mother boards. But, so far, the LAN devices on this board cannot be driven in my diskless environment. Besides, next biggest problem of mine is that I still need VGA card to drive this MB. The current status I complains of can also be seen on the ML etherboot-users at 10/26/2001 and 10/07/2001 (please find the ones by je2bwm). Maybe you can find very good guide for troubles or FAQ on K7S5A on the BBS for ECS in OCworkbench. So, The next MBs I bought were Chaintech's CT-7SIDs (without embedded LAN devices nor OverClock feature, though).

20001223ceti-tou-rack.jpg  I want to show you what I have been interested in, in building my machines named "CETI-machines" for SETI@home clients.  6 PCs among these CETI-machines are shown left side.

1. Can I build powerful SETI@home clients(PC) in low cost ?

OS = Linux (RH6.0)

 Processor = Celeron,etc. , Over Clocked.

 Less parts = Disk-less(Etherboot),

 Less and less parts = Case-less, VideoCard-less

 Remove input devices = No keyboard, No mouse

 What remains? = MB,CPU,FAN,Memory,LAN card and Power Supply.

 Lower cost parts = Second-hand or Junk parts, how they cost?

 Thermal problems in summer = Big cooling fan for people

20010701ceti-hanger-rack.jpg 2. How to automate downloading work-units and uploading results

 Up/Downloading Scripts = FetchCache driven by crond in staggered time

 Running Scripts = RunCache started regularly by crond

 Dialup environment = automatic dialing only in low-cost night-period("TeleHodai" time)

3.  How to manage many machines( >20) they easily crash or fail.

 Centralized Store = all data on one NFS server

 Shared Storage = one /usr directory shared among CETI-machines

 Client Alive monitoring = Gathering output of periodic "ps" on each CETI-machine

 Account of results = Rough report from output of  RunCache

 If something wrong found = telnet, restart crond, sending HUP to client

 If I can't login  = ping  and finally reboot,or hardware trouble

 Hardware and temperature Monitoring = LMSensors

 Clock Synchronization = ntpdate command

20010526ceti-plasticrack.jpg 4. Unresolved issues

 Power Dissipation  =  Dual CPU machine

 Noisy fans =  Low voltage driving

 Compact  installation = bookshelf a substitute for professional rack

 Batch startup/shutdown = WakeOnLan and shutdown resident agents

5. Simple tools for CETI-machines

 UV-PROM Writer (Kit for electronic enthusiast)

 UV-PROM Eraser ( No timer, Paper cased)

6.  Related key words and cues to use with Web Search Engines

 Diskless client = Etherboot, Netboot

 UV-PROM Writer Kit in Japan = akizuki densi tsusho

7. Another contribution to setiathome: SETI@home store
