REASONS PEOPLE WENT ON CRUSADES

There were 8 crusades over almost 200 years.  Why did people continue to go?

 

Desire for land

Possible wealth (loot?)

Escape trouble at home

Adventure

Promises by the Pope

          Forgiveness of sins

          Serfs would be free

          Freedom from jail

          Death sentences changed

          Fees and interest on debts removed

          Death in holy war would mean instant heaven

          Freedom from taxes
