 BASIC EXPECTATIONS

Always bring your book, pen, pencil and 3 ring BINDER to class
All work should be kept in your .BINDER
Be on TIME
Be KIND and POLITE to everyone in the room- rudeness, even in fun, is not acceptable!
Tests that you miss must be made up AFTER SCHOOL. You have ONE WEEK to make up missed tests for full credit. After that it may be for only partial credit
My after school day will be _______________________.

HOMEWORK

*Homework will be assigned 4 TO 5 times a week. Sometimes I will COLLECT the homework; sometimes there will be a QUIZ using your homework.
*Homework is intended to INTRODUCE_ a topic or to REINFORCE something we have already learned.
*Homework will be a combination of reading, answering QUESTIONS, taking NOTES, and writing ESSAYS. Explaining your ideas both ORALLY and in writing will be important in this class.
*Homework copied from someone else will result in no credit for either person
*If you skip class, all work for that day is worth NO CREDIT

Late homework WILL NOT be accepted for credit unless it is an essay or a multiple assignment, or a project. It may be made up for 80 % credit AFTER SCHOOL WITH ME.

Extra credit homework: You may hand in ONE EXTRA CREDIT EACH WEEK. This will add to your homework grade. See extra credit sheet for ideas. If you do not follow directions or do a poor job on it, no extra credit will be given.

CLASSWORK: Videos, computer work, group work, daily class review questions make up your classwork
.

GRADES for each quarter will be determined as follows:

*Homework: 10%
*Notebook: 10% (usually 2 per term) HAND IN 4 CONSECUTIVE A'S on notebook checks and you do not need to keep any more. But you must keep them and hand them all in together!!!
*Class work : 10%( you must BE PRESENT to do this. It frequently CAN- NOT BE MADE UP later; you must do extra credit for it)
*Quizzes: 25 %
*Tests: 25%
*Independent project: 20%

CHEATING is a serious matter. If you are caught cheating on a test or copying a homework the result e a zero with no privilege of make up.

BOOKS

Books are 5 years old. Each book costs $ 55.00. If you lose your book, you will have to PAY for it before a new one will be issued. Books must be turned in at the end of the year in the same condition that they were received. These books must last 6 MORE years so excess wear will cost you money. Loose or broken binding - $ 10.00 - 25.00. Excessive wear $ 10.00 - 20.00. If your book is constantly UNCOVERED I reserve the right to take it back and KEEP IT UNTIL YOU BRING IN A BOOK COVER.

COMPUTER & INTERNET USE

We are supposed to have classroom sets of laptop computers as well as the computer lab. Hopefully, many projects and assignments this years will use these computers for word processing as well as research on the Internet. You must be Internet certified by the SCHOOL as well as have PARENT permission to access the Net. We will take one class period to do the school certification. If you miss this class you must get it somehow on your own.

The following warnings are basic school policy and will be strictly enforced.

PLEASE USE CAUTION WHEN BROWSING THE INTERNET. ACCESSING UNACCEPTABLE, INAPPROPRIATE SITES WILL RESULT IN A LOSS OF PRIVILEGE FOR ONE YEAR FROM DATE OF OCCURANCE!! NO EXCEPTIONS!! and STUDENTS WHO TAMPER WITH EQUIPMENT (stealing, abuse of machines, etc.) WILL BE SUBJECT TO PERMANENT LOSS OF PRIVILEGE.
I have read and agree to follow this.

THE FOLLOWING ARE SKILLS NEEDED IN LATER LIFE which I hope to model, teach and reinforce this year

*Basic skills in reading, WRITING, speaking and LISTENING
*Thinking skills – the ability to think creatively to reason, to make decisions and to solve problems
*Personal qualities – individual RESPONSIBILITY, self – esteem and self MANAGEMENT and INTEGRITY
*Interpersonal skills – work on TEAMS, teach OTHERS, work with people from DIFFERENT backrounds, even those you don’t LIKE. (80% of all people fired from their first job are fired for lack of personal and interpersonal skills, not from lack of knowledge about how to do a job!!)

GOALS FOR THE YEAR

1.To cause your brain to begin to INTERACT with information and to learn to take pride in LEARNING
2.To increase your ORGANIZATIONAL and NEATNESS skills
3.To enlarge your skills in RELATING to other people & reinforce character qualities especially HONESTY
4.To help you learn added RESPONSIBILITY for yourself or others. (I WILL contact your parents if there seems to be a problem, as they probably have the most influence in fixing it.) Push-ups will be an option (instead of detention) for tardiness to class.
5.To introduce you to the HISTORY and heritage of other COUNTRIES and TIME PERIODS so today’s world will make more sense.
6.PREPARE YOU TO DO WELL ON MCAS TESTS!!!

As your teacher I promise to try my best to be an EXCELLENT teacher and to require EXCELLENCE from you.
