| 1n 1994 Jim Clark, founder of Silicon Graphics, collaborated with Marc Andreesen from the University of Illinois to found Mosaic Communications. This company was later renamed to Netscape Communications. Marc had been the project leader at the University of Illinois on the Mosaic web browser. Mosaic was the first graphically driven web browser. Many of the original developers followed Marc and joined the Netscape team. Netscape was a huge success. It offered many innovate services and represented around 80% of the browser market share. With the release of Windows 95 Microsoft attempted to take on Netscape. Microsoft released its own web browser, Internet Explorer, that was free of charge. The companies battled week to week competing for the top spot. Internet Explorer eventually closed the gap and the once dominant Netscape diminished and lost most of its market share. Netscape announce it would move to an open-source development process and would no longer charge for the software. Netscape had several releases that were considered flawed but with the release of Netscape 7.0 they offer a stable and attractive alternative to Internet Explorer. I prefer the Netscape browser, it seems to do a better job of blocking unwanted pop up windows, and offers quicker service. Source material: www.blooberry.com |
