1930 World Series
Red Sox v. Pisces: Old Hat tackles the New Fish
The world series featured a matchup between the Red Sox, the highest octane scoring offense this side of the penny arcade, against a Pittsburgh franchise making its first trip to the post season.
Game One
Ted Lyons on the hill for the favored Sox and lefty Bill Walker for the Pisces. Lyone retired the 1st 3 Pittsburgh hitters without breaking a sweat in the top of the 1st. However in the bottom of the 1st, Walker must have had World Series nerves as the first two hitters singled and Lou Gehrig walked to load the bases for the Babe.
Babe promptly doubled in 2 runs and Gehrig made it to 3rd. Glenn Wright followed with a ground ball to Charlie Gehringer which he promptly booted allowing Gehrig to score and Ruth to move to 3rd. Somehow Walker calmed down and got out of the inning with a pop up and what would be the first of a few critical double plays. Neither team had a runner past 2nd base in the 2nd or 3rd, but the Pisces finally got on the board in the top of the 4th when both Travis Jackson and Bob O'Farrell drove in 2-runs with singles, O'Farrell's with 2-outs. Pittsburgh added a run in the 5th as Gehringer homered. Gehrig homered in the bottom of the 5th to pull the Sox to within a run. No scoring in the 6th and the Pisces added a run in the 7th on Pie Traynor's HR. The Amazing Firpo (Marberry) relieved Walker who had been stellar since the first, in the bottom of the 8th and staved off a a bases loaded 1-out rally by inducing the Red Sox 3rd dp of the evening. Harry Heilmann knocked a 2-run pinch hit homer in the top of the 8th. Boston added a run in the 9th on a 2-out error by Traynor and had Gehrig at the plate with 2-on and 2-out, but he popped out to end game 1 for a 8-5 Pittsburgh win

Game Two
Pisces took an early 2-0 lead in the first with a 2-out rally capped by a 2-RBI double by Adam Comorosky. The Babe drove in his first run of the night with an RBI ground out in the bottom of the 3rd to cut the lead in half. Pittsburgh added one in the 4th and two in the 5th to lead 5-1. Well, big ole Babe blasted a 3-run bomb in the bottom of the 5th to bring the crowd back to life as the locals had begun to get a little nervous. Glenn Wright followed an out later to tie the game. Boston took control of the game in the bottom of the 7th by adding 4 runs on 3 hits, 2 walks and an error. The Pisces tried to make it interesting in the 9th by putting a couple on the board with 2-outs, but the rally stalled when Charlie Grimm grounded out for a Boston 9-7 victory.

(Kimsey, 1-0) (Vance, 0-1)
Game Three
Series moves to Pittsburgh at Forbes Field where the fans have been waiting for 4-years for this moment. Lefty Stewart on the hill for the Pisces and Pat Caraway for the Red Sox. The fans in Pittsburgh were up on their feet throughout the 1st inning in the cold blustery weather cheering for their heroes. Neither team mounted any sort of rally until the top of the 4th when Boston scored on Ruth's RBI single to drive in Gehrig who was on base due to Travis Jackson's errant throw into the crowd.
The Pisces came back in the bottom of the 4th to go ahead 2-1 on a single by Traynor. Surprisingly Gehrig and Ruth combined to tie the game for Boston in the top of the 6th, but the Pisces regained the lead in the bottom of the inning after two walks, a sacrifice by Stewart and an RBI fielders choice by Traynor. Pittsburgh tacked on an insurance run in the 8th and had a 4-2 lead going into the 9th. Stewart came out to start the 9th to a standing ovation and quickly got the first out. Wally Gilbert singled and Bubbles Hargrave walked signaling the end of Stewart's evening. The Amazing Firpo came on and got a quick 2nd out on a liner. George Loepp singled to left and the bases were loaded. Sammy Byrd ripped the first pitch to right center plating the tying runs and moving the go ahead run to 3rd. Marberry buckled down and got Gehrig to ground out to 3rd. Comorosky led off the bottom of the 9th with a single and made it to 3rd on an Earl Webb single. Boston brought their infield in and Blair ground to 2nd with Comorosky heading for the plate. A good throw nailed him and there were men on 1st and 2nd with 1-out. Firpo flew out and Traynor lined out to end the inning. Ruth led off the 10th with a hit, but that was followed by a strikeout and a double play. Gehringer led off the bottom of the 10th with a single, but that was followed by 2 strikeouts. Now with 2-outs, Johnny Frederick singles Chuck to 3rd to bring up Comorosky. Adam lined an 0-1 pitch from Kimsey to right to end the game. Pittsburgh wins 5-4.
Series - Pittsburgh 2-1
(Marberry, 1-0) (Gray, 0-1)
Game Four
Walker for Pittsburgh again and Lyons for Boston. Walker started this performance off just like the one in Boston by giving up 3 runs in the 1st. These however on a 3-run HR by Lou Gehrig. Gehrig homered again in the 2nd for a 5-0 lead and again in the top of the 6th to push the lead to 9-0. Lyons pitched a solid 5 1/3 and Hogsett staved off a little scare on the way to an 11-4 Boston win.
Series tied 2-2
(Lyons, 1-1) (Walker, 1-1) (Hogsett, S-1)
Game Five
Final game in Pittsburgh and the faithful are raucous. Sad Sam Jones for the Pisces and Sheriff Blake for Boston. Boston starts the game of well on a 2-out RBI double by Glenn Wright. The Pisces tie it up in the bottom of the 3rd on a Gehringer ground out. Wright continued his good hitting by leading off the 4th with a long HR down the left field line to put Boston back in front, but the Pisces came right back in the bottom on a Travis Jackson double, but Jackson was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. Jones and Blake got through the 5th and Jones shut down Boston in the 6th. His reward was a 3-2 lead and a seat on the bench when John Stone pinch hit for him and drove in the go ahead run. The Amazing Firpo started the 7th and set the Sox down in order in the 7th and only a walk to Gehrig in the 8th. Pittsburgh added on in the 8th with a 2-run 2-out double by Johnny Frederick for a 5-2 lead. Marberry closed it out with an uneventful 9th and a 5-2 Pisces victory.
Series - Pittsburgh 3-2
(Jones, 1-0) (Blake, 0-1) (Marberry, S-2)
Game Six
Back in Boston for game 6 and the fans are out in force, but probably surprised to see their boys down 3-2 in the series. Dazzy Vance and Dolph Luque hooked up in a rare 1930 pitchers duel. Neither team had a runner past 2nd base until Boston got Gehrig to 3rd in the bottom of the 4th. He did not score however as Vance struck out Bernie Friberg to finish the inning. Neither team threatened throughout the 9th with both Vance and Luque throwing gems out there. In the top of the 10th things got started for the Pisces when Adam Comorosky led off with a double. Travis Jackson followed with a groundout to 2nd and the go ahead run was now on 3rd. Luque buckled down and got Charlie Grimm to pop out to 3rd. Bob O'Farrel was intentionally walked to bring Vance up (and to force Pittsbugh to pinch hit) John Stone came to the plate and walked after a hard fought 8 pitch AB to load em up. Pie Traynor fouled off the first 2 pitches to get into an 0-2 hole, but battled back to 3-2. On the 3-2 Traynor ground a single through the hole between 1st and 2nd to drive in two and put the Pisces in front 2-0 and bring all of Pittsburgh to it's feet. Chief Hogsett came in for Luque who received a standing O as he walked off. Hogsett got Gehringer to fly out to right to end the inning. The Pisces brought in the Amazing Firpo for the 9th. Loepp led off the bottom of the 10th with a single and Byrd, pinch hitting for Gilbert, singled to right to put runners on the corners with no out. Hal McKain pinch hit for Chief and promptly ground into a 4-6-3 double play that brought Boston to within one, but cleared the bases. No quit in Boston as Porter singled and Ruth singled to bring up Gehrig with 2-on and 2-out. Marberry fell behind 2-0 to the veteran Gehrig, but go the Iron Horse to ground out to second and pandemonium ensued for the Pisces and a 2-1 victory.
