World Series Recap

Evolution Week 2 Report

In Week two the Expos (15-5), Highlanders (12-6) and Red Sox (12-8) started to separate themselves from the competition. The Expos and Red Sox sport the leagues best offenses combine with respectable pitching staffs while the Highlanders are allowing the fewest runs with above average offense.

Finding tough times this week were the Mud Hens (4-16) and Pisces (6-12). The Mud Hens are allowing an appalling amount of runs (254 through 38 games) that hasn't been overcome by their average offense. For the Pisces the outlook isn't quite as bleak though we'll have to see whether the week 2 is more indicative of the team than the generally good performance of week one.

Week 3 Report

In Week three both teams that had been struggling bounced back to post winning weeks as Detroit went 11-7 and Pittsburg led all teams with a 13-7 record to climb within one game of the Western division leading Highlanders. The Pisces have been led by recent hot streaks by Charlie Grimm (419/463/613), Eddie Brown (377/394/580) and especially Ken Williams (361/418/705) who scored 16 runs and drove in another 16 over the twenty games.

In the Central the Red Sox and Expos continue to post the best records in the league with solid 10-8 performances. Earle Combs' hitting streak ended at 31 games.

In the East continues to be a dogfight with no team able to separate itself from the pack. This one looks like it will go right down to the wire.

In the amazing performance category check out this week's performance by Lou Gehrig who launched himself to the front of the pack in the MVP race with an unbelievable twenty games.

Evolution Week 4 Report

Week 4 saw the Red Sox, Highlanders and Expos continue to separate themselves from the pack. The Red Sox and Expos sit tied a top the Central division and enjoy an eight game lead over their nearest wild card competitor. The Highlanders went 11-7 this week and opened a five game lead over the Pisces.

The real drama is in the East where are four teams still have an excellent shot at the division. With the divisional lead changing hands daily right now the Dodgers and Collusion share the top spot with the Suds only a game back and the Giants three. While the Dodgers currently sit tied for first place poor roster management has caused them to overuse key players putting them in a tight spot the rest of the way.

The final race is for the first pick in next season's draft. At this point it is too close to call with every non-playoff team having a realistic chance at the position.

In terms of individual performances Lou Gehrig's record setting year continues. Greg tried to tell me he was doing it all in garbage time but I don't believe him. Red Lucas remains undefeated as he tacked another four wins onto his imposing record (16-0 ). However he has been giving up more runs of late as his ERA rose from 1.51 to 2.11.

Players of the Week

Lou Gehrig (again), Highlanders, 343/459/757, 6 HR, 21 runs, 26 RBI, 26 RC
Sheriff Blake, Giants, 3-0, 2.06 ERA, 35 IP

Honourable Mention

Bob Fothergill, Giants, 437/512/606, 4 HR, 16 runs, 14 RBI
Babe Herman, Dodgers, 354/391/744, 5 HR, 18 runs, 10 RBI
Curt Walker, Pilgrims 433/485/667, 4 HR, 13 runs, 12 RBI
Bibb Falk, Expos, 369/461/615, 14 runs, 15 RBI
Jesse Haines, Collusion, 3-2, 1.70, 42 IP
Waite Hoyt, Suds, 3-1, 2.35, 31 IP
Kent Greenfield, Red Sox, 3-0, 2.38, 23 IP

MVP Award Race

Lou Gehrig, 381/494/811, 16 2B, 11 3B, 26 HR, 78 runs, 86 RBI
Babe Ruth, 319/474/650, 19 HR, 67 runs, 69 RBI
Al Simmons, 380/439/642, 29 2B, 11 HR, 60 runs, 59 RBI

Harry Heilmann, 371/451/560, 53 runs, 46 RBI
George Harper, 387/474/650, 57 runs, 60 RBI

Hod Lisenbee, 10-2, 2.57, 122 IP, 5 CG, 2 SHO

Evolution Fortnight 5 Report

This play period the Cuyahoga Falls Collusion had their best stretch of the season so far with a 12-6 record to move into first place with a 2.5 game lead over the Dodgers. They continue to be led by superior pitching, giving up the second fewest runs in the league. With Jesse Haines and Lefty Grove in the stable this team should be able to continue to play consistently enough to maintain and build upon that lead. The Dodgers continue to play consistent, if unspectacular, baseball and are poised to make a move should the Collusion falter. The Suds and Giants, both in contention early, have struggled of late and need to make a move soon if they hope to see postseason action.

The Central continues to be home to the top two teams in the league, the Washington Expos and the Boston Red Sox. Neck and neck for most of the season the Expos pulled ahead with a 13-7 stretch while the Red Sox (relatively) faltered at 9-11 and now have a four game lead. While the Expos won their series 3-2 the real difference was their records against the other teams of their division. Nonetheless both teams appear headed towards the playoffs as the Red Sox have a larger lead in the wildcard race than the other division leaders have in their own divisional races. The Mud Hens had their best week yet with a record of 12-8 while the Bandits had their worst at 6-14. Both have started to set their sights at the first pick overall as the playoffs seem out of reach.

The West has turned into a two team race between the New York Highlanders and the Pittsburg Pisces with the Pisces making up a little ground and only stand three games back at week's end. The Pisces continue to be driven by the league's best offense that has been buoyed by timely hitting (they are scoring more runs than they should) and the occasional 23-12 rout. The Highlanders have given up the fewest runs in the league and appear poised to ride superior pitching and Lou Gehrig all the way into the playoffs.

Players of the Fortnight

Pie Traynor, Pisces, 494/518/630, an unbelievable 40 hits in 18 games, 20 runs, 18 RBI
Hod Lisenbee, Highlanders, 4-0, 2.52, 35 IP

Honourable Mention

Babe Ruth, Red Sox, 375/602/679, 4 HR, 17 runs, 15 RBI
Lou Gehrig, Highlanders, 370/446/740, 6 HR, 15 runs, 18 RBI
Jim Bottomley, Mud Hens, 387/465/627, 21 runs, 20 RBI
Travis Jackson, Pisces, 444/507/651, 11 runs, 13 RBI
Joe Genewich, Expos, 3-1, 1.60, 34 IP
Ray Kremer, Expos, 3-2, 2.20, 41 IP
Ted Lyons, Red Sox, 5-3, 2.86, 57 IP
Jesse Haines, Collusion, 2-0, 1.29, 28 IP
Lefty Grove, Collusion, 4-1, 2.98, 42 IP
Rube Walberg, Mud Hens, 4-0, 2.55, 35 IP

MVP Race

Lou Gehrig, Highlanders, 130 RC, 379/484/796, 23 2B, 12 3B, 32 HR, 93 R, 104 RBI

This is really a one person race. Gehrig's numbers are unbelievable, however other guys having really good seasons are:

Babe Ruth, Red Sox,109 RC, 328/532/655, 24 HR, 85 runs, 86 RBI
Al Simmons, Giants, 92 RC, 377/437/629, 38 2B, 13 HR, 76 runs, 78 RBI
Paul Waner, Suds, 88 RC, 356/423/541, 68 runs, 67 RBI
Harry Heilmann, Collusion, 86 RC, 383/465/561, 65 runs, 54 RBI

Interesting that the Pisces and the Expos who have scored the most runs don't have anyone who qualifies for real consideration.

Cy Young Race

Despite Red Lucas' 20-0 record this isn't as open and shut as you would think. He hasn't pitched as well of late and the won-loss record has been buoyed by fairly extensive use in relief and unbelievable offensive support. Here are the top candidates:

Red Lucas, Expos, 20-0, 2.71, 139 IP, .692 QS%
Hod Lisenbee, Highlanders, 14-2, 2.56, 158 IP, 2 SHO, .842 QS%
Pete Alexander, Suds, 11-5, 2.57, 168 IP, 3 SHO, .714 QS%
Jesse Haines, Collusion, 9-8, 2.33, 178 IP, 1 SHO, .810 QS%
Ray Kremer, Expos, 11-5, 2.51, 129 IP, 2 SHO, .813 QS%

Week 7

After skipping a week and a little bit late here is the review of Week 7. This play period saw a solidifying of the playoff positions as the Expos, Red Sox, Highanders and Collusion all appear assured of playoff positions. The best race is for the first overall pick in next season's draft where the Mud Hens and the Pisces are poised to battle right to the finish.

In the player performance category Babe Ruth had the kind of week that the Red Sox had been hoping for all season hitting a remarkable 13 HR, scoring 30 runs and driving in 33. Red Lucas lost his first, second and third games of the year despite posting and ERA under three. This brings his record to a respectable 25-3. Lou Gehrig continues to have a year that defies description. Finally despite pitching fairly well Charlie Root has a record of 11-18 and is in danger of losing twenty games.
