| What is a Buckeye you ask? Its a tree (Aesculus Glabra), native to the Ohio Valley region, that produces a poisonous nut that resembles the eye of a buck. It was popular folk wisdom that carrying a Buckeye in the pocket brought good luck. Buckeyes did not become the school's nickname until 1950, though it had been in use years prior since the Buckeye is the state tree (eat Buckeyes Stanford). |
