GAME OF INCHES......

OHIO STATE 44 - NC STATE 38 (3 OT)

HO HUM.....ANOTHER OVERTIME WIN......The "Luck of the Irish" is nice, but they don't have anything on the "Lucky Buckeyes". Playing their 3rd ovetime game in their last 6 games, Ohio State defeated the North Carolina State Wolfpack by a score of 44-38 in 3 Overtimes as Safety Will Allen and Linebacker A.J. Hawk (see photo above) stopped NC tailback T.J. McClendon just short of the goal line on 4th down to end the game.

IT WASN'T EASY.........After leading 24-7 with just over 8 minutes left in the game, Ohio State proceeded to "Bring back some Coach Cooper" memories as the punt return team fumbled the ball away and the offense tossed an interception in those last 8 minutes which enabled NC State to roar back and tie the score with just 21 seconds left in the game...at least in the regulation game. After NC State tied the game, OSU opted to run the clock out and go to overtime...and - why not - the overtime win was the 3rd OT win in their last 6 games.

OVERTIME....PASS, PASS, PASS.......Luckily in the overtime sessions Coach Jim Tressel implemented a "revised offense".......he completely ignored the running game as OSU did not call one running play on their way to three touchdowns on three possessions in the three ovetime periods. BRILLIANT STRATEGY. Even though OSU's defense had trouble stopping NC State in overtime, Krenzel passed for 3 td's to lead OSU to another "improbable" victory.

Next game is at home against Bowling Green. May we run for at least 50 yards in that game..............

NOTES

1. MAURICE WHO? That would be Maurice Clarett and yes Ohio State misses his running ability. OSU only managed 44 yards on 32 carries. About 1 yard per carry.........and it gets worse. The two tailbacks who replaced Clarett (Ross and Hall) managed only 3 yards on 17 carries....Quarterback Craig Krenzel was the leading rusher with 37 yards on 13 carries......

2. LUCKY WIN? You bet. OSU lost in almost every offensive category - First Downs (15 for OSU, 28 for NCS), Total Yardage (295 for OSU, 345 for NCS), Fumbles Lost (2 for OSU, 1 for NCS), Interceptions Thrown (3 for OSU, 2 for NCS).
3. FOUL PLAY FOR OSU....in more ways then one.....OSU had a lousy 14 penalties for 129 yards....the second week in a row they've hit triple digits in penalty yardage. That's a new yardage record for a Coach Tressel OSU team.
4. WIN STREAK EXTENDED.....The Win gives OSU 17 straight victory's - the longest active streak in the Nation. The OSU record for most consecutive wins is 22 set by the 1967-1969 team. Number 23 for this team would be (will be?) November 1st at Penn State.
5. WHERE'S THE DEFENSE.......OSU gave up 17 points in the last 8 minutes of the 4th quarter and two touchdowns and almost another in the overtime win. The NCS Quarterback completed 100% of his passes on two of those drives and was 36-52 for 315 yards for the game.
6. HISTORICAL DAY AT THE SHOE.......as this was the first OVERTIME game ever played at the OSU Horeshoe stadium since it opened in 1923. It also was the first
7. KRENZEL SHINES IN THE AIR.....as he passed for 4 touchdowns, including 3 in overtime, and ran for another.
8. CLOSE WINS ARE NOTHING NEW.....this was the 9th win in the last 17 games for OSU that was decided by 7 points or lest.
