FANS GO HOME HAPPY.......  OHIO STATE 33 - MICHIGAN STATE 23 A PERFECT AUTUMN DAY FOR FOOTBALL AT OSU.........Oh to be a buckeye fan on Saturday. The sun was shining, it was 40 degrees at kickoff, and there were 105,000 people cheering on the buckeyes.........and they were not disappointed......OSU, after falling behind 7-0 in the first period, roared back to outscore Michigan State 33-10 over the next three quarters to come away with an impressive 33-23 win. THE DEFENSE ONCE AGAIN MADE A KEY PLAY.............early in the second period when OSU was trailing 7-3 and they intercepted a pass and made a long return that enabled OSU to score a touchdown and take the lead 10-7. Although Michigan State passed for 351 yards, only 55 of those yards came after halftime. The running defense, which is ranked #1 in the nation, once again smothered their opponent as MSU was only able to gain only 5 yards rushing in 17 attempts. OFFENSE DID THEIR JOB.........again as OSU tailback Lydell Ross ran for over 100 yards for the third straight game and quarterback Craig Krenzel threw for 3 touchdown passes; however, overlooked by most people was the breakout game by tight end Ben Hartsock who led the buckeyes in receiving yardage with 54 yards to go with a key 17 yard touchdown reception on a 3rd and goal play from the 16 yard line. KICKING GAME ALSO QUIETLY .....contributed to the win. Ohio State certainly has been spoiled by the reliability of placekicker Mike Nugent as he quietly kicked 4 field goals in 4 attempts to keep OSU safely ahead of MSU. Nugent is now 13-15 for the season - and we just take his kicks for granted.....but we still take them. NEXT GAME.......is at home against Purdue on November 15th. Kickoff time is 03:30 and it's on ABC TV. It's the last home game of the year. NOTES 1. OFFENSIVE NOTES.... a. OSU outgained MSU in total yardage 395 to 378 and had 23 1st downs to 20 for MSU. b. Lydell Ross ran for 125 yards. If he can average 119 yards over the last 3 games (Purdue, Michigan, Bowl Game) he will break 1,000 for the season. c. Craig Krenzel tossed 3 TD passes against MSU; prior to the game he had only thrown for 6 TD passes the entire season. d. Place kicker Mike Nugent set a personnel record with 4 field goals against MSU. e. Wide receiver Michael Jenkins has now caught at least one pass in 36 consecutive games. 2. DEFENSIVE NOTES......... a. OSU held MSU to 5 yards rushing. In the last 3 games, the OSU defense has allowed an AVERAGE of 8 yards per game. b. OSU defense will be a part of the MSU offensive record books as MSU quarterback Jeff Smoker set an MSU record with 55 attempts (breaking the record by 1) and 35 completions (breaking the record by 3). c. OSU gave up a kickoff return for the first time since..........Michigan State.......1984....when Larry (Levi?) Jackson returned a kickoff for a touchdown. 3. TID/BITs........... a. Attendance at OSU stadium was 105,194.....the SECOND LARGEST crowd ever for an Ohio State football game. b. The home win for Ohio State was the 15th straight win at home.....Coach Tressel has only lost 2 home games in almost 3 full seasons as a coach at OSU. (20-13 to Wisconsin on 13 Oct 01, 34-22 to Illinois on 17 Nov 01). c. The win brings Ohio State into a 3 way tie for first place with Purdue and Michigan in the Big Ten with only two games left - and those teams happen to be the last two games of the year for Ohio State.
