Our aviary is in our home and we are located just outside of the southeast boudary of the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada.  We have been breeding birds in our home for about twenty years; beginning with the American budgie and then moving on to the English budgie.  Over the years, we have encountered most of the problems any breeder might come across and would like to make some of the solutions we have found that worked available to others who are thinking of breeding.  Since any breeder finds that they have more babies than they wish to keep for themselves, we would also like to offer pertinent information that might be helpful to pet owners.

We now breed the English budgies, rather than the more common American budgies for a variety of reasons.  The English budgie is the show budgie, whereas the American budgie is considered the pet budgie.  However, English budgies also make wonderful pets because they have been bred to be steady and calm on the perch for exhibitions.  They are a larger bird and tend to be less nervous and flighty than the American budgies.  Over the years, we have enjoyed attending many bird shows and exhibiting our budgies, and we have been lucky enough to come home with a number of trophies and rosettes.  Any babies that we do not decide to keep for our breeding programme or our show team are sold as pets.  We have had some wonderful reports back from our pet owners, letting us know how sweet-natured their bird is and usually how well it talks.

The budgie is known to be in about the number three spot on the list of the best talking birds, with African Greys in the number one position and some of the Amazons taking number two.  Although the budgie has a quieter voice than the larger parrots, it is actually a much better talker, with a larger vocabulary, than most of the parrot family.  With it also being a very acrobatic and playful bird, as well as extremely affectionate, the budgie has earned its place as one of the most popular pets!  Pet owners are finally coming to realize that budgies and other pet birds are not just a pretty pile of feathers that decorate a cage, but a loving and intelligent companion pet that enjoys sharing its life with the humans that it owns.
