My department
BLIS: the medicine of the future
Okay, for those of you who have no clue what I do during the day (apart from checking my email, having frequent coffee breaks etc) then this is a good place to start...
I work with BLIS (Bacteriocin Like Inhibitory Substance) or another words antibiotics produced by bacteria that target and kill other bacteria. Specifically I work with the bacteria that cause dental caries known as the mutans streptococci. Our lab looks to find a way of implanting bacteria producing BLIS as a means of preventing bacterial related diseases from occuring.
I am a PhD student in Microbiology at the University of Otago. It is a great univeristy with a great student life :). My department is VERY social with an active beer apreciation squad on Friday nights. I guess we like to appreciate what our former Microbiologists have achieved in the world.

I am also the departments social club coordinator which means we get to party a few times through the year!
