The Sunday after the Ice Dive a few of us headed out on Lake Dunstan ( an artificial lake in Central Otago by Cromwell) for a looksee that I would never forget.
The story goes that ten years ago when the Government flooded the Clutha and Clyde rivers in Central Otago to make Lake Dunstan some crafty person thought it would be neat to put a car on a bridhge before it flooded. So somebody did this with a 54 Vauxhall.
The aim of this days dive was to find the car on the bridge. Now this is no easy task given that the lake is now 10 metres higher than 10 years ago. But armed with a GPS in the boat we has just a little trouble in locating the bridge.
In beautiful conditions with at least 10 m visibility I descended to where the bridge was thought to be. Wow this was amazing. Out of the gloom came this large dark object-the bridge. On it, clear as day was a car--a 54 Vauxhaul... I swam around the car, over it and along it. you could get inside if you really wanted! Amazing. It sounds kinda a wierd doesn't it but it adds to a dive to see an object that we take for granted sitting in an unnatural habitat (ie under a lake). very cool!
The lake where there is a car under it..somewhere
A miserable spot to be at...
