Developmental Stages of Elementary School Children
Third Grade
Posess a "know it all attitude"
*    Is able to assume some responsibility for actions
*   Actively seeks praise
*   May undertake more than they can handle successfully

*   Explores the relationship of feelings, goals and behavior
*   Learns about choices and consequences

Fourth Grade
*   Wants to put some distance between themselves and adults and may rebel against authority
*   Needs to be part of a group
*   Seeks independence
*   Possess a high activity level
*   Can express a wide range of emotions and verbalize them easily
*   Can think independently and criticially but are tied to peer standards
*   Begins to increase their sense of truthfulness
*   Are typically not self-confident
*   Begins making decisions
*   Gains a greater sense of responsibility
*   Set personal standards
*   Develops personal interests and abilities
*   Develops social skills
*   Learns to engage in group decision making

Fifth Grade
*   Tends to be obedient, good natured and fun
*   Possess a surprising scope of interests
*   Finds TV very important
*   Is capable of increasing independence
*   Is becoming more truthful and dependable
*   Tends to be improving her self concept and acceptance of others
*   Forms good personal relationships with teachers
*   Improves listening and responding skills
*   Increases problem solving abilities
*   Begins maturational change
*   Gains awareness of peer and adult expectations
Kindergarten
*   Attempts only things he knows he can do
*     Needs attention, affection and praise
*     Is energetic and fidgety
*     Has short attention span
*     May show extremes in behavior
*     May become less well-behaved as the school year progresses
*    Develops a positive, realistic self image
*    Learns to respect themselves
*    Begins to understand their own uniqueness
*    Gains awareness of feelings
*     Learns to express feelings
*     Learns how to participate in groups
*     Begins to learns from her mistakes

First Grade
*      Wants to be the "best" and "first"
*      Has boundless energy
*      May be oppositional, silly, brash and critical

*     Cries easily, shows a variety of tension releasing behaviors
*     Is attached to the teacher
*     Has difficultly being flexible
*     Often considers fantasy real
*     Develops a positive, realistic self concept
*     Learns to respect himself
*     Begins to understand his own uniqueness
*     Gains awareness of their feelings
*     Learns to express feelings
*     Learns to participates in groups
*     Begins to learn from their mistakes
Second Grade
*     Begins to reason and concentrate
*     Worry, are self-critical and may express a lack of self confidence
*     Demand more of their teacher's time
*     Dislike being singled out, even for praise
*     Develops a concept of themself
*     Begins to understand others
*     Gains respect for others
*     Builds relationships with others
*      Develops a sense of responsibility
