| KYUSS WERE: GUITAR - JOSH HOMME BASS - NICK OLIVERI/SCOTT REEDER DRUMS - BRANT BJORK/ALFREDO HERNANDEZ VOCALS - JOHN GARCIA Hailing from Palm desert, California Kyuss, are widely acknowledged for being the pioneers of the booming underground 'stoner rock scene. Formed in 1990 by John Garcia, Josh Homme Nick Oliveri and Brant Bjork, Kyuss started jamming at desert parties in & around the isolated towns in the desert. Their sludgy down-tuned guitar sound (often played through a bass-amp for full-on chest-rumble effect) had the same awesome effect on people that heard it wherever they played, making Kyuss fans a hardcore of music lovers. After gathering a following & signing to a small independant label 'Dali', they released 'Wretch'. The album was under-produced & under-funded and went unnoticed, though the band gained notoriety by constantly touring, thrashing their live, powerful sound impressing fans and earning the respect of other musicians. One of these singer/guitarist Chris Goss, decided to produce the bands next effort. The bands label eventually went bust (and Blues for the.. was never fully appreciated at the time of it's release) though when Scott Reeder joined, the band were still continuing to gain momentum. Sky Valley was released and after touring, the bands personal affairs began to intervene, and Brant decieded to leave. Alfredo Hernandez joined them for the last album, but after another rift between Josh and John, the band split. Kyuss dictated the next generation of stoner-rock, when Josh, Alfredo and Scott, re-appeared in 1998 as the ever-popular Queens of the stone age. John is in (the superb) Unida, and the solo effort from Brant Bjork was an excellent stoner lp that boasted Brants skill on drums, guitars and vocals. The Kyuss sound has inspired and are admired by many bands throughout the rock scene. Their sound brings a following of die-hard fans who Tool have even covered 'demon cleaner' with Scott Reeder.
