HOLE were formed in LA, California, USA, late 1989, by Courtney (actress/stripper/formerly of Sugar baby doll & Faith no more) Eric (who was working for Capitol records at the time) Caroline and Jill. In spring 1990 they released the 'rat bastard' EP, subsequently re-locating to Seattle area.
Their debut album was produced by
Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) & Don Fleming, it was voted album of the year by New York's Village Voice magazine & was highly rated in the UK.
Meanwhile Courtneys relationship with
Kurt flourished, they married in 1992 & had a baby girl who they named Frances Bean. The following year Patty & Kristen replaced Caroling & Jill. They signed to D.G.C (much to the dismay of Madonna who wanted them for her label 'Maverick')& in spring 1994 released the memorable album, 'Live Through This'. It made the UK top 20, but the success was overshadowed by Kurts suicide on April 8th. Courtney held a memorial two days later hailing everyone there to call him an asshole.
On June 16th, Kristen Pfaff was found dead in her bath, her death was drug-related.
By this time, Hole were touring world-wide at festivals & venues, doing many tv appearances. They recruited
Melissa (who had met Courtney through Billy Corgan). They had major success with their two singles 'Violet' and 'Doll Parts'. At this time Courtney had built a reputation for being violent and aggressive towards various celebs & others.
There was then a brief spell of Courntey concentrating on her acting career. Hole released 'my body..' & their Fleetwood Mac cover, but there was no tours.
By the time 'Celebrity Skin' came out, Courtney herself was an all round A-list celebrity. The album received mixed reviews, ranging from the old fans who preferred the previous albums, & felt this was Hole watered-down, & the new mass audience that this new 'watered-down' Hole appealed to.
These days, Hole have been caught up in endless legal battles & issues, not being able to release anything under the name Hole with any record label until they have sorted it out. Courtney's looking to be a personal ambassador to take major record companies by the balls. Melissa has left, though their last UK performance - 1999 Brixton/Glastonbary left the impression this band ar staying about awhile, as their live skill never ceases to put us in awe.
