| .... conTRast was formed by Dee and Dal at the beginning of 2000. D* (who has a weird habit of talking to strangers on the train from time to time) saw Fin a couple of months later, at the train station (where D* spends half her life), & after they got on the same train, she spoke to her. Within seconds we realised things in common, same art college & tutor(!) & Fin lent me Babes In Toyland-Fontanelle there & then, with a promise of some Patti Smith in return. Fin told me she had just sold her bass, & bought a guitar, but her sister, Ciara, was a drummer. We had a few fun jams, playing various Hole, Veruca Salt & Babes songs (as well as a fair few I had written), I taught & recruited my pal Jo to play bass. The first time conTRast took the stage was at the Charles Cryer in Carshalton, (surrey). A 3-song burst for a crowd of a&r ppl & proud & suspicious family & friends. The line-up was D*(guit/vocal) Dal (guit) Ciz (drums) Jo (bass). After a making a sketchy demo on tape, & a few more practices, Jo went travelling, & we recruited Fin to take her place, on the condition that she was no temporary replacement! We lined up our first gig for the end of January 2001. Dal decided to quit around 3 weeks before the gig.... We decided to do it anyway, & adapted some of the songs to suit us better. For a while we have toyed with the idea of getting a new guitarist, or putting Fin on guitar & getting a new bassist. But our practice room is only just big enuf for us! Besides as we get better with each live experience, we grow confident in doing the job properly without anyone else & we're happy. Since then, we scrapped our demo, & we have played the cartoon, the Half-moon & Nescot college, doing one gig a month since the begininng of the year. We have had many things happen on our journey so far, & met some interesting people in other local bands, as well as some not very interesting people. Of course we are still at the bottom of an incredibly huge ladder. Latest- Ciz has decided to leave, and we are searching for our new recruit, to continue giggin next year... UPDATE: Well, me and Fin had a good search about, but our new recruit has not turned up, we had a practice with someone, who later decided she wanted to play funk. Ok, then. I decided to call it a day. We had fun, and learnt a lot. Fin and Ciz are both playing in new bands and you can find out about these on www.ciaralavers.com. We also started a covers band together, so may well be playing at a venue near you soon. Oh, and, my new band is coming soon..so watch this space. love peace&respect to all who supported us during our time... & thank you conTRast x |
