Day 23 Sunday, July 10th
Happy Birthday Angie! Racked up 285 miles today into Oregon. My goodness there are a lot of trees here! Trees, trees, and more trees. Its very pretty and green but it all looks the same. We opted not to ride up the entire coast as we figured it would add a few more days to the trip since the winding coastline makes the going so slow. Beautiful but slow. Instead we headed for Crater Lake and what an amazing sight that was! Its the deepest lake in the United States 1,943 feet deep that is -- and its the most beautiful blue I have ever seen. The pictures we took dont even look real but they are. As we looked at the lake from the mountainside neither of us could believe it was real. Its so placid nothing seems to disturb the water. Its just amazing. The lake was formed by a volcanic eruption that was so powerful the volcano actually collapsed into itself forming the crater. The weather varied dramatically around the lake too. When we entered the park it was about 65 to 70 degrees. By the time we got to the lake with its snow capped mountains it was about 40. When we descended it was 75. Check out the picture of JDawg in the snow. Its so wild to go through these types of climate changes in a matter of minutes.
Once we left the park we headed for Bend, Oregon about 100 miles away. Saw lots of trees on the way (imagine that). We found a hotel room on the first try, got my filthy bike washed (finally) and packed it in for the night. |
