Day Forty-One
Packing for the last time
Ready for the final leg
Day 41 Thursday, July 28th
WE DID IT!  620 miles -- a chunk of it at the end through the pouring rain again as if the Swamp Rats were welcoming us home.  Thanks guys, we really appreciate that.  The grand total for the trip:  10,044 miles.  Pretty awesome Id say.

We cut a path east through Tennessee and then north through Virginia doing nearly 80 all the way.  We started at 8:30 this morning and got into Bowie, MD at 9:30 PM.  Not too shabby.  We were so excited to be home neither of us seemed to care that we were damp, tired and sunburned.  We made no stops today except for gas.  We did take one awesome picture after the rain stopped in Virginia.  The clouds were just hanging in a line in the Shenandoah mountains.  Very pretty.  There is also a picture of Honey doing the last pack for the trip and of course the last picture for the day the two of us safely home.
Shenandoah Mountains after the rain
Amazingly, we had only one incident on the entire trip; the breakdown the night that we were supposed to be getting engaged.  Had I known that was the plan, I probably would have pushed his bike to the hotel!  The angels were certainly with us.  No critters came out of the mountains to have us for dinner and the bike was good as new the next day.  My bike fell over in CA too but there was very little damage and that was only to the chrome.  The speed demon managed to get through 20 states and NEVER got a speeding ticket.  Unbelievable.  We both managed to stay sunburn free which is almost miraculous given that we rode the heat wave all through the country.  We even made it through Death Valley when it was 118 in the shade.  We made it to the top of Pikes Peak without falling off (the mountain or the bikes); we endured the White Sands; we traveled through many National Forests, Parks and Wilderness areas and never got lost (except trying to find Fish & Boo Boo).

All in all, this trip has been amazing and one that we will surely remember for the rest of our lives.  Here we sit 41 days later, healthy, happy, and engaged.  :-)

We both want to thank everyone that followed our trip and posted to the Guest Book.  Your comments and e-mails helped us stay connected and amused.  To those we missed along the way, we will surely be in your neck of the woods again.  To those we got to see along the way, one more big thank you for putting us up.  Were now looking forward to seeing and catching up with everyone here at home.

The Big Adventure has come to a close for now but that most certainly does not mean that were done with adventure.  You never know where the next one will lead.  Dont worry well keep you posted.
Shenandoah... the only mountains between us and home.
(J Dawg entry) Thank you all for coming with us on our Big Adventure. Knowing you all were there, kept us connected to home. We end this chapter now with a head full of memories and a saddle bag full of mementos. This trip had some special meaning to me. Besides completing the Dawg plan (to those that knew-- thanks for not letting the cat out of the bag), I got to retrace some of my Grandfathers footsteps from his boyhood ride out west. For those that don't know, he was a real American Cowboy. I didn't follow his path exactly.... maybe a prelude to the next chapter..... anyone up for a ride?

To my honey,  I'm proud we ride beside each other (even if it's always the PINK bike that people like). You should marry me and ride beside me forever!
We close this chapter in the Big Adventure
