Day 27 Thursday, July 14th
We racked up 120 miles today and didnt travel anywhere. Well I guess technically we went from West Yellowstone, MT into Yellowstone, Wyoming and did that in about 10 minutes. We toured Yellowstone National Park today. It was fantastic! My personal favorite is still Yosemite for its varied landscapes but Yellowstone takes the prize hands down for wildlife. As we entered the park the first thing we saw were signs for a Bald Eagle Management Area and signs indicating no stopping, standing, parking, etc. Traffic immediately stopped as everyone was looking at the eagles nest you could see from the road. It got even better when we took the first turn off than ran beside a river. We stopped and joined a crowd of people and spotted the bald eagle that was flying around the river. It was just amazing. We also saw a flock of swans and a couple of otters playing in the water. We continued on and encountered a herd of Elk and as we rounded a corner there lay a huge buffalo. It was close enough to the roadside that you could have touched him (but only if youre really stupid). JDawg managed to get a shot of him before he got too irritated. We continued through the park along winding roads that followed rivers. There were waterfalls everywhere and many that you could get really close to. We saw geysers and hot springs too. We stopped at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and it was beautiful but paled in comparison the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
We started and ended the tour the same way. As we were leaving the park for the day we encountered two bald eagles perched in trees above the river. Both treated the crowd by flying from tree to tree. What a magnificent sight eagles in flight. We came back to our hotel in Montana (yes we stayed in the same place again) and then went into town. We did a little shopping and had Elk and Buffalo burgers for dinner. Were going to check out Old Faithful tomorrow and head into Wyoming. |
