| October 7, 2006 Brookline, MA The semester has begun well. I am taking Intellectual History of Archaeology, Pre-Urban Societies, Archaeological Ethics and the Law, and Osteoarchaeology (at Harvard). Classes seem to be going well and the professors are all nice. The other grad students are also very nice and helpful. Tonight, there is a multiple-person birthday party just over the BU Bridge, in Cambridge (it's walkable). I had volunteered to bring seven quiches, but I think I might switch to beer. Nothing too interesting going on. Sorry this is so bland. Will strive to include more gossip later. July 26, 2006 Boston, MA In Mugar Library again, though I will be getting phone service this weekend. My new number will be 617-879-3060. That said, I don't have a phone. Kelly arrives this afternoon to depose someone. She's also going to show me around Cambridge. Then she's off again tomorrow afternoon to depose someone in another city. She seems quite power hungry, but then, she is a lawyer. The apartment is looking better, still. I have a new stove and kitchen floor! Still no cabinet space, so my glassware is piled in the living room, but at least that revolting floor is gone. July 18, 2006 Boston, MA, USA I'm sitting in the Mugar Library (unfortunate name) at BU, catching up on things. Fortunately, they have an early log-on program, so I can use their computers for free. I can also print stuff, though no doubt I will wish I had more printing capacity by the end of fall semester. Perhaps all those 101 lists weren't such a good idea, but otherwise, how do you know which pick-up lines to avoid? Graham continues to reside in England, though hopefully he will be able to join me within the next few months. I hate U.S. Immigration on principle, but whenever I call them, they're very helpful and friendly. I've been working on getting the apartment put together. They should be putting down a new kitchen floor tomorrow, which is good, as the old one is OLD. There's still the question of an extreme lack of counter/cabinet space, but I'm on the look out for some kind of table/counter thing with shelf space... That will magically carry itself to my apartment for free. I've sent my resume to several temp agencies, but they're being very bad about getting back to me. Not sure if this is because Boston has so many universities that the students all sign up for temping during the summers, so there's nothing to be had, or what. But, seriously, how lazy of them! And how do students expect to get into grad school or get good jobs when they're just *temping* during the summer? Hello? Fellowships? Internships? Gaining experience in your field of choice? Seriously. Otherwise, things are going well. The kitchen is quite well outfitted, though a lot of it is stacked in the living room and the pots and pans are *in* the stove. I bought some herbs, which are thriving on the window sill and I plan to use in cooking someday. Brookline, the town where I live is nice. It's technically not part of Boston, but on a map, it looks like it took a chunk out of it and is surrounded on three sides by Boston. It's apparently a liberal, hippie enclave, prompting some conservative radio idiot to say that it, along with Madison, WI and several other places should be bombed or have terrorists sent there or something. Nice to know the religious zealots are loving their neighbors. It's got several parks and is very pedestrian friendly. Also, there is a Trader Joe's a few blocks away, a public library, and a great tex-mex place that does fresh guacamole and fabulous salsa. It's addictive. Other nearby attractions include the Upper Crust (a great pizza place), T.J. Licks (an ice cream place that may or may not be owned by Mr. Jefferson), a wildlife sanctuary in the corner of a park, a great fish place that dad found, a dessert restaurant, and lots of sushi and other ethnic places! Wow! If I didn't live there already, I would definitely want to visit Jenny! And she has a sleeper sofa? What am I waiting for?!? |
