Rhinoceros
The Black Rhino "hooked - lipped" The smaller, yet more aggressive of the two rhino species. They have a distinct hooked upper lip that overlaps the lower lip. They eat fodder trees and shrubs and are dependant of surface water for drinking and wallowing. They are dark grey in colour. A Cow with a calf is really aggressive and one should never ever get in between a mother and her calf. The have very bad eyesight but have excellent smell. They normally rely on smell to find an adversary. They are very agile for their size and can change direction very rapidly, even when charging. Don't ever think you can outrun a rhino, they can very quickly reach speeds of up to 28 m.p.h. / 50km/hr. Almost extinct in the world because poachers kill them with "AK47" assault rifles for their horns. The horns are sold to eastern countries where it is grounded to powder and used as an aphrodisiac and their horns are sought after as dagger handle material.
The White Rhino "square - lipped" This rhino is the larger of the two species. The most distinct feature is their broad upper lip. Their colour is not white and the name "white" rhino comes from the word "wijdt" in Dutch meaning "wide". |
