They are nocturnal animals and loaners. They feed on earthworms, centipedes and millipedes as well as small mice, reptiles and frogs. When frightened or in danger they roll up in a tight ball to protect their vulnerable bellies.
They are endangered because of the use of pesticides by farmers.
