The Eland is the largest antelope in Africa. Bulls weigh up to 900kg but the average is about 700kg. The cows are about 200kg lighter. They are gray or red-brown in colour but as they grow older they loose their hair and become a blue-gray.
They are browsers but will eat fresh grass as well. If water is available they will drink often but in arid regions like the Kalahari they get the necessary water from the food they eat. They can migrate and in Botswana and the Kalahari they migrate for long distances in search of food and water.
They are excellent jumpers and can clear a 2 meter fence with ease.
