Bird watching

Bird watching

Are you perhaps interested in bird watching as a hobby?

My family and I are members of the local bird watching club and enjoy watching birds tremendously.  There are numerous clubs in South Africa and everywhere you go you'll find people interested in birds.  Birds are fascinating creatures and have evolved to be able to survive just about anywhere on the earth.

In the Southern African region we are fortunate to have more than 900 species breeding here.  It is more than the total species found in the United States and Canada together.  Of these 900 species only 133 are endemic.

Being so numerous it would be impossible to mention all the birds found in South Africa but one things for sure, you'll find them wherever you go and in sizes that differs from the large ostrich standing some 2 meters tall to the small Locust Finch only 9 cm in length.

With so many species around a good illustrated field guide is an essential piece of equipment along with a good quality pair of binoculars.  Luckily there are some excellent publications available and you'll be bird watcher right from the very start, once you've decided to start participating in  this lovely pastime.
