Curriculum Vitae

José Carlos Serroni is architect, set and costume designer for the theatre, TV and shows. He is also a painter with several individual exhibitions and has contributed to many collective expositions.

Serroni was graduated in architecture at Architecture and Urbanism College in University of São Paulo (FAU-USP), having concluded his course with an interdisciplinary thesis on Scenography and Theatre Architecture, in 1976.

From 1976 to 1982 he was a set and costume designer, and coordinated the Department of Art and Set Design at the RTC - Rádio e Televisão Cultura, the public television station in São Paulo. As a free lancer he designed sets and costumes for Globo TV Network and MTV Brazil.

From 1985 to 1990 he carried out several projects in stage design all over Brazil as a consultant for the former FUNDACEN - Fundação Nacional de Artes Cênicas - (a governmental foundation for the scenic arts). Since 1989 Serroni has set up his studio for theatrical architecture, in building and remodelling projects, also acting as an independent consultant. His studio is also specialized in stage design,stagecraft and stage lighting. In June 1992 he coordinated the First International Meeting for Theatrical Architecture, in Rio de Janeiro, for the project Rescue and Development of Scenical Techniques promoted by the O.E.A. (Organization for the American States).

Serroni has participated at the Prague Quadrennial for contemporary Stage and Costume Design and Theatrical Architecture, in Prague, Czech Republic, in 1987, 1991 and 1995. In 1987 he was the Brazilian General Commissioner in the exhibition, and received one of the 5 honorary awards by the international jury. It concerned "combining traditional Latin America Art with the modern concept of theatre." In 1995 he received the most important award in the exposition: the 'Golden Triga', given by a jury composed by, among others, Mel Gusson, Jaroslav Malina, Iain Mackintosh, Helmut Grosser.

In July and August 1997 he took part in the program "People to People", which took place in Popular Republic of China, co-ordinated by USSIT - a meeting for discussing Theatrical Architecture, Set and Costume design, Stage lighting, Theater Production, in the cities of San Francisco (USA) and Beijing, Nanjing, Souzhou, Shanghai (China).

Serroni was a guest participant at the XX and XXI International Bienal of São Paulo, in the section for special events, with an exhibition of set and costumes designs. He has participated in several international theatre festivals with the 'Grupo Macunaíma' (Macunaíma Company) stagings - he is its set and costume designer since 1987. Among the most important events we should mention: Japan's Toga Festival; Seoul's Theatre Festival during the 1988 Olympic games; Festival Cervantino, in Mexico and in Cadis, Spain; Summer Festival of New York; Summer Festival in Germany; the Caracas Festival; Londrina Festival, in Brazil; Hong Kong Festival. He has received several prizes in scenography and costume design along his career - the MAMBEMBE, APCA, GOVERNADOR DO ESTADO, APETESP - and for four times the MOLIÈRE, which is the most significant theatre award in Brazil. Since 1987 he has been coordinating the set and costume design department at CPT - SESC (Centre for Theatrical Research), directed by Antunes Filho. This department has been holding annual courses on set and costume design, and produces all the sets, props and costumes for the CPT productions. The centre has held several exhibits and courses and workshops on stage design, costumes and props, all over Brazil. Serroni has been working as a scenographer and costume designer for several theatre productions since 1974. Among them are: Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth and Hamlet; An Adult Orgasm Escapes from the Zoo, by Dario Fó; Beckett's Katastrophé and Oh! Happy Days; Molière's Tartuffe; Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman; Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan; Plínio Marcos' Madame Blavatsky, All Nakedness Will be Punished, Nelson 2 Rodrigues and Paradise North Side, from plays by Nelson Rodrigues; Bivar/Paulini's The Coffee Trade Foxes; Loyola Brandão's Zero; A. Dumas' Kean adapted by J.P.Sartre; Path of Salvation by Jorge Andrade; Gilgamesh and Dracula and other Vampires by Antunes Filho. He co-ordinated and adapted the sets for the Brazilian productions of plays as such as Calderon (Teatro Stabile di Torino/Luca Ronconi), Anthony and Cleopatra (Vanessa Redgrave), Rise and Fall of Arturo Ui (Berliner Ensemble/Heiner Müller), a Festival with indian dancer Madhavi Mudgal, etc.
