The Betrayal

The Betrayal was painted in February, 1996. I had always wanted to paint a scene with both Ted and Carl in it, and this is one of my favourites from the movie. I chose monochrome, so the viewer can concentrate on the most important element in the painting, which is the expression on each face as the characters deal with their own personal pain. The shadow from Ted's hair runs down his cheek and into the black robe, forming an impenetrable wall between the two figures. At the same time, the pale highlights in his hair blend into Carl's right shoulder, connecting them in a wash of light. This painting is my tribute to the relationship between Ted and Carl, and the joy that they brought to their fans over the years.
