You guys are doing a great job. Don't listen to what others say. You know your heart's in the right place, and you are doing what you can. You can't save them all, but the ones you do save mean the world. Keep it up. Don't lose heart. Send in an app
ication to www.critterhaven.org they help shelters in need all the time. That's all they raise funds for.
Love you all!!!

In yet another response to Amy at Petland, Amy, after reading your posting of 6/25, I'd like to ask you to consider being more honest with yourself and us in implying a comparison with yourself and your position at Petland and animal welfare advocates and
organizations. In reality you have nothing in common with us at all except you DEAL in animals and we deal WITH and FOR animals.
The fact is that your business has a mission like all business of turning a profit. The mission of an animal humane society is the welfare of the animal and you don't not could you possibly serve both. Just how much authority do you have to refuse some
f those animals? What would your owner/district manager say if you suggested seriously or your refused to handle puppies/kittens from dealers for ethical reasons? You'd be out the door.
So it seems that your "love" has its limitations and also its vested interests which amount to a conflict of interest. If I were you and Petland, I would have supported the Adopt-A-Thon too, out of obvious guilt. The humane society should have refused s
ch support for obvious reasons of principle. Accepting such support was a conflict of interest for them as well.
Your suggestion to visit the store and that you would do whatever to make us "comfortable" regarding your "babies" I find chilling. I'm sure you're a good salesperson and I think you would do a very good job of showing us a neat clean, and affectionate e
vironment there in the store. But what goes on in the store is not what we mainly have a problem with. And Amy, what kind of "love" are you talking about when you sell your "babies?"

This is a lovely site. I hope all of those furbabies get adopted. Those of us who live in Ohio, like myself, need to change the cruelty laws to make them sticter.

TO PATTY: The issue with Petland is not so much the conditions puppies live under in the Petland stores as it is with the conditions of the puppy mills from whence the Petland puppies came. The little ones you see in the store may appear healthy and happy
But they are there only at a terrible price. PLEASE check out the facts on this. There are links from this web site to get you started. If Petland tell you that their puppies don't come from puppy mills, DON'T believe it. It's just not true. Responsible
og breeding is a careful and selective art that does not provide enough puppies to stock the cages at stores like Petland. Reputable breeder wouldn't put their treasured progeny on the retail shelf to be prey to the first impulsive and irresposible perso
to put their money down. I REPEAT: Puppy mills provide the ONLY reliable source of animals for Petland. Petland doesn't have to go out of business. The most successful pet businesses today thrive selling pet food, supplies, fish, birds, hamsters etc. Unt
l Petland changes the way it does business, please shop elsewhere.

Patty D- I have been at the shelter too- many times. I have NEVER found a locked gate! They rescue Dogs and Cats- As for birds, rabbits- etc- EVERY species of animal has a rescue. One shelter can't do it all. It is very obvious to me you work for and supp
rt Petland. What are you doing for rescue!?- except supporting petland and adding to the MISERY of our beloved animals?! Janet.

Patty we are opened from 4PM to 6PM and anytime by appointment. If you can't come during opening hours just call Peggy at 532-4300, she will meet you there any time. We would love to extend our opening hours but we need dependable volunteers to do that.
As for Petland, they are profiting from the misery of dogs (and cats) on factory farms. Dogs are not livestock but that's how many (probably most) of the breeding dogs are treated.
As for the other critters, there are rescue groups for those animals, but none around here that I know of. We are full with cats and dogs, so we can't take anymore of anything. Maybe we will be able to expand someday and take in other types of animals, b
t there isn't room right now and no one who would know how to take care of them.
I also hate dog racing and horse racing. But the greyhounds have it made compared to the parents of the puppies at Petland. At least they get out of their cages to do what they were bred to do.

I was reading your guest book and noticed that you're all aobut dogs and cats, but where can I find places for unwanted birds, hamsters, bunnies, and other critters? If you want to complain about inhumane conditions complain about the dog races or horse t
acks. I've been a customer at Petland for quite some time and have no complaints at all. On the other hand, I have tried to visit your shelter a few times and only find a locked gate!!

I have the firm belief that when a person adopts, buys or how ever they come about having a animal in their home that it is their responsiablity to care and love that animal until it's death. It can not be a "quick" decision to get a animal. Puppies and
kittens are cute but they are not little forever. If you have a close relationship with your animal they will be beautiful in your eyes.

To: Amy of Petland
Amy,
Not that long I ago I, like most of us was ignorant of many of the things that contribute to overpopulation of pets and the immeasurable suffering that takes place because of puppy mills.
At one time I would gladly have bought "that puppy in the window", but with knowledge came the moral obligation to change.
I don't belive there is any way that a business like Petland can maintain an adequate inventory of dogs and cats without reliance on the kind of mass production provided by puppy millers. Reputable breeders simply would not and could not supply a business
with adequate animals for them to remain in business. In fact no reputable breeder would ever place an animal in a pet store. Even if the dogs and cats were properly bred and humanely cared for, the need to make a profit would necessarily lead to inadeq
ate placement standards for the pets sold.
Thank you so very much Amy, for joining us in dialogue. We are all learning and working TOGETHER to bring about the desparately needed changes for our canine and feline citizens.
You, Amy are in a wonderfully unique positon to do something that will REALLY make a difference. And we are with you. There is a vast community of rescue and animal welfare people who, I am sure will work with you will be with, as you move towards making
these urgent changes.
We already have successful corporate models in the likes of PetsMart which not only does not sell dogs and cats, but actively supports adoptions and animal welfare issues.
Anything at all you could do to help Petland adopt a similar mode of operation would be to make the world a far better place.

If you truly believe in what you are doing, then come to Missouri. I will gladly give you a guided tour of where you puppies are coming from. If you can't do that, then I have no respect for anything you are doing.
Jody---Mary Kate and Ashley are BLOODHOUND MIXES! I'd bet my bottom dollar (which isn't saying much, LOL). You should see if you can find law enforcement to take one or both of them. Many police officers and deputies will take them in as family pets wi
h cross-training in search and rescue.

For Amy, of Petland
Glad to see that you too are concerned about the well being of dogs. I have no doubt that is true. Also good to see that you are in a management position. I certainly encourage you to begin to work from your position of responsibility to encourage Petl
nd Corp to break off all relations with puppy mills and further to stop the mass breeding, marketing and selling of "babies" as you call them. The situation at the moment is so extreme, so critical regarding the welfare of dogs that Petlands support of s
elters and adoptions is a drop in the bucket. Until we get to the point where there are minimal numbers of dogs euthanized each year, there is no good reason to be supporting the breeding, marketing and selling of pups as Petland does. We are presently
illing in the range of 3 - 6 million dogs a year, and at tax payers expense. County and municipal shelters and dog pounds provide a nice government subsidy to the Petland Corp. and other breeder/sellers.
Breeding and selling is one thing, using puppy mills is another. Every puppy I have ever been shown at Petland stores comes from Missouri and so far no Petland employee has ever been willing to provide me with contact information on the breeder of a spe
ific dog. Contacting the breeder of a pup to learn more about the parents, breed line etc would be a natural thing to do, but Petland is not willing to share that information for obvious reasons, it is not a reputable breeder but a puppy mill that is the
source of the puppies.
Again, thanks for your concern. I hope that you will use your position to help us in our effort to get Petland Corp. to do the right thing and stop selling puppies. there is plenty of money to be made in selling pet supplies, guppies and goldfish and ma
be working with breed rescue groups. I am sure that Petland Corp. could set up a system to help expedite the rehoming of rescue dogs and even turn a profit on the activity.

In response to Amy at Petland - Amy, please stop and think about the mother's of the puppies you sell. They are living lonely, miserable lives, many in wire cages, and I know this for a fact because I talked to the owner of one of the brokers you use and
he admitted it. He said that he couldn't stop buying from the breeders who keep them in wire cages because he wouldn't be able to get enough puppies to meet the demand from pet stores like yours. I hope you will do the ethical, responsible thing and stop
selling puppies and kitties. If you ever change your policy I would be happy to buy all my supplies from you. Until that day arrives I will continue to order my supplies from PetSmart, one of the many ethical pet store chains who do not sell puppies and
kitties, and will continue to encourage them to open a store in our area. I have been planning an email and telephone campaign to encourage them to open a store here. I hope it will convince them. Think about it Amy. Think about your own dog living all it
life in a wire cage with it's sole purpose to breed puppies. Not much of a life for man's best friend, is it?

I am a proud employee and Manager of Petland, South Point. I strongly encourge the no-kill shelter that you have established in Ironton and would like everyone who reads this to know that Petland supported the Adopt-A-Thon held by your shelter and contin
es to offer its support. A few things that we have in common are that we both have tremendous love for animals of all kinds, we want them to have the best of lives and be adopted by families who will give them these things. I know about the bad images p
aced on my store, but I encourage anyone with any doubts about my "babies" to visit Petland South Point. I will take as much time as needed to make you comfortable with our store.
