The CNS tap direct exam demonstrated a very large number of free swimming trypomastigotes forms, well documented in the M-G-G stained smears. The boy had a rapidly deteriorating clinical course, and died three days later. No autopsy was done. Immunefluorescence and ELISA for T. cruzi were positive.
