ASC-US: Squamous cells of undetermined significance

Drs. Prolla and Diehl's INTERESTING CASE OF THE MONTH February 2002 case B answer

ASCUS Papanicolaou staining

ASCUS Papanicolaou staining

ASCUS - The smears show a few abnormal squamous cells, with minimal cellular changes: macronucleosis, slight hyperchromasia and binucleation, that did not satisfy the criteria for the low- or high-grade categories, and were considered of ASC-US category. At colposcopy no lesion was found. Follow up six months later by cytology revealed complete regression of the abnormal cells. Hybrid Capture II was negative for HPV.
