Now 22, she�s the beauty queen of the state. She had the chance to compete against the rest of the states on the pageant show, but she turned it down wanting to get into College.
Her mother was angry with her for the choice she made and went over the limit by kicking her out of the house.
Mary never spoke to her mother since then. That happened almost a year ago. Why go to the contest when she knew she�d win? Why go and crush someone else�s dream? Mary hated the thought of that and she was happy in College.
Mary was leaving the cafeteria of the school when a bright purple publicity grabbed her attention. It was an ad about a modeling company that she never heard of before that was looking for new faces.
Mary took one paper and went to her dorm that was on the other side of the school�s property. The building was behind a row of tall trees. The property itself was huge and beautiful. There were flower gardens around the dorms. There was even a little lake between the College and the dorms where wild ducks swam during the summer. There were concrete benches around the lake and also a few wooden picnic tables.
Mary walked up the steps and walked into the lobby. She grabbed her mail and greeted the security guard that was seated behind the big desk that was in front of the entrance. She went to the elevator and pressed the button. While waiting for it to come down, she went through her mail quickly.
She heard the bell as the doors opened and she looked up to see her roommate and her boyfriend walk out smiling at her before she went in the elevator and hit the button number five. While the elevator went up, Mary looked at the ad again. She read it over again biting her bottom lip.
She arrived at her floor and walked out of the elevator and went to her door. She opened it and walked in closing the door behind her. She walked to her bed and placed her bag on her cover and placed her purse beside it. She made sure she had her keys and left the room and went to the kitchen to make herself a dinner. She walked in and saw a few of her friends.
She was making a sandwich as her friends started to talk about the ad that she took. No one really knew what she had to do and what to wear for it. Mary grabbed her plate and sat down beside them as they were talking about it. They soon turned at her and watched her waiting for her to help them out.
�What?� Mary asked after swallowing her bite.
�Are you going to the mall tonight for that modeling thing?� Jamie asked.
Jamie�s room was across the hall right in front of Mary�s. They met the first day of school and became good friends. Since then, every Saturday nights, they had a movie night at Jamie�s room.
�Maybe, but I�m still thinking about it, you know?� Mary replied sadly.
�Are you still thinking about what happened to you because you stepped out of it?� Jeanette asked.
Jeanette was Jamie�s roommate who got along with Mary and the three of them became good friends before Mary�s roommate came into the picture.
�Yes. It�s like, if I go and I�m sure I�ll get the position because of my past, will my mother come back into my life?� Mary said shrugging her shoulders.
She stared at the food in front of her. Her friends knew about her mother putting her into beauty contests and everything. They never assumed things about it either. They took the chance to know the real her and they saw that she didn�t think of herself as being better than someone else.
�You should go for it,� Amanda said after awhile.
Amanda was Mary�s roommate�s sister. She was a year older then the rest of the girls, but she was really nice and was accepted in the circle of friends instantly.
�I don�t know,� Mary mumbled getting up from her seat.
She grabbed her plate and walked to the garbage where she threw the food away. She walked to the sink and washed the dirty dish. She dried it and placed it back to its place before locking the door. She turned around and said her goodbyes to her friends before going back to her room.
