Since I started college in August 2000, I have been exposed to the joy of volunteering. My first volunteer experience was with BayFest in the fall of 2000. The second semester of my freshman year I volunteered as a tutor at the Baptist Children's Home. I read with a first grader named Charlie once a week. I learned that all this child needed was someone to show love to just him and to make him feel as if he is important, special, and smart. As the weeks passed and I saw great improvement, I knew that it had been time well spent.
Since then, my sorority and other campus organizations have been crucial in influencing my willingness to serve. Through Alpha Gam I started particiapating in a program called Rolling Readers. This program allows me to go to a first grade classroom once a week to read to the students. These children have a heart of gold and are so insprirational and uplifting to see on a weekly basis.
Through another campus organization, I participated in the Junior Achievement program. This program allowed volunteers, like myself, to go to an eighth grade classroom once a week to encourage the students to stay in school and understand the economic benefits of getting a higher education. Their slogan is, "Let their success be your inspiration". This is so true with this program. The more excited they kids got and the more they understood, the more they wanted to attend college and pursue and high paying job. This was an unbelievably uplifting experience!
