One bright sunny day in the year 1980, a group of young and dynamic people comprising of Government Servants, Business, Airline Staffs, Shipbuilding Personnels, etc. Together with the guidance and encourangement named "Labuan Jaycees", today known as "Junior Chamber International Labuan (JCI Labuan)". An "Induction Ceremony" was held on 27th September 1980 witnessed by the Intan Jaycees, also known as "Godmother" whereby 18 potential members were inducted and awarded a "Charter Membership Award" each. Good News finally came in on 28th November, 1980 when the registrar of Society (R.O.S) officially announced that Labuan Jaycees have been accepted and registered with their society. Our Chapter President elect was JC Louis Rampas who was a District Officer based in Labuan. Within a short period of time,Labuan Jaycees have Implemented various projects on this beutiful island such as Bus-Stop Welcoming Sign-Boards, Fun & Trade Fair, Post Boxes,Telephone Booths, Baby Shows, Water-Balancing Tanks for schools, Anti-Aedes Campaign and also constructed a "Jaycees Park" at Pohon Batu Beach for the benefit of our community. Apart from implementing projects, various Leadership Training Courses were conducted for the members and public as well. By early 1982, the membership strength increased by 100%,i.e. from 19 Charter members to 36 members. At the 7th Annual Convention held in Kota-Kinabalu in 1982, Labuan Jaycees was awarded the JCM Award for the "Most Outstanding New LOM of Jaycees Malaysia", an award which is very much honoured. AS the saying goes, "all good things must come to the end".That was in year 1984 when bad luck suddenly strikes and due to some unforeseen circumstances, Labuan Jaycees was abandoned/cast aside and left inactive for almost three years. |
Eventually, sometime mid of 1986, the spirit of Labuan Jaycees once again come back to life. Headed by JC Sabilah Ali and a group of former and new members, Labuan Junior Chamber was revived and re-registered with the R.O.S. Plan of Action ware drawn and Training Courses were conducted with immediate effect. To start the bell rolling, a "Run for Peace" with Labuan Hash House Harriers was organized as part of the membership gathering for the members. Next, the "Labuan Swimming Competition" and the "Customer Awarness Exhibition" was successfully organised and well participated by the public. The bus stop was also given a fresh coat of paint by the members. In 1990, Labuan Jaycess volunteered to host the Area II LOMs Meeting at Hotel Labuan. The name "Jaycees" was officially changed to "Labuan Junior Chamber" on 19th January, 1991.In the year (1991) the chapter managed to capture two JCM Awards during the ANC, one for the hosting the "EXCO" meeting and the other for hosting the "Opening" of Jaycees Week. Currently, our membership strength stands between 25 to 30.JCI Labuan now(2007) has a record of 23 Past Presidents and 5 JCI Senators. We will continue to recuit more members to ensure continuous growth in the organization. The momentum/dynamism gathered in the past years should continue to grow and it is our fervent hope that future Incoming President would implement even larger projects and aim to win more Awards at the National Level to put JCI Labuan in the fore-front amongst the larger and stronger Chapter of JCI Malaysia.
