| 1. Gordon is angered by The adventures of Huckleberry Finn because in the book Huck repeatedly calls Jim n****r. I agree with Gordon but also disagree with him. Since Gordon is black the word offends him very much, however it was the way everyone spoke at the time. 2. The teacher used the book because she considered the book as a critical part in the history of American literature. Freedom of speech is the freedom to say whatever one feels at certain point in time, without having the fear of getting persecuted for it. 4. Censorship is the attempt of controlling what one is able to read and think, in order to try and control ones thoughts. 5. Yes if a book is censored you are taking away the right for the author to freely express his feelings. Although you may not agree with the author they have the right to publish their own feeling according to the founding laws of this country. 6. No selective censorship is used for someone to censor what they do not particularly agree with, or in this case what will eliminate the school from ridicule from parents. The First Amendment is being broken by selective censorship, it would be better to censor everything rather than just a small portion of writings. 7. By using the school paper to cover the issue I feel Barney was being fair. The entire school was able to read it and give their own opinion. The key to fair journalism is to be able to lay out the facts, and tell a story fairly whether or not you agree. 8. No, not all newspapers are fair. Actually the majority are bias to one side or another. Rarely these days a newspaper that is completely fair to both sides. 9. If the author gives an opinion is should be stated that it is an opinion and that it should be based on the facts of the case. 10. Barney and Gordon learned grew in their friendship through the debate on whether to ban the book. The realized they could still be friends even though the may disagree on some issues, in a sense they could agree to disagree. Their relationship grew from this and in the end they were stronger friends. 11. Yes everyone no matter what their age should be concerned with freedom of speech. Although it may have not directly affected you, without this right ones opinions could never be expressed. If you want your opinion heard no matter what it is, you can only express it with the right of freedom of speech. No matter what the issue all men on this earth should be allowed to peacefully express whatever their hearts desire. |
